Sun dogs
« on: January 27, 2019, 05:43:17 PM »
Its been pretty cold here lately.  Nights have been in the teens below zero and days have been in the single digits.  Therefore, its been good weather for seeing sun dogs.  For those not familiar, a sun dog is a type of halo effect around the sun that happens when the sun is near the horizon and there are lots of ice crystals in the air.  It usually has to be in the single digit temps or colder for them to occur.

Here are a couple pics taken Thursday on the way home from work.  First pic is with the sun higher above the horizon, making the left and right sun dogs taller.  Second pic is later.  The left and right sun dogs are less prominent, but a 3rd dog is visible above the sun.  Our farm is below the left-hand dog.

Thanks Scott, not having that lower temperatures that is a phenomenon I've never seen (or heard of).

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, it must be electrical.

Same here.  It used to get cold in Michigan growing up, but that's a different kind of cold.

That is neat Scott. Not much flat land here as the sun comes up over mountains and sets over mountains.
