Cable Insulation Stripper Suggestion
« on: February 11, 2021, 08:20:38 PM »
I'm in the market for a cable stripper for doing battery cable/welding lead (Flex-A-Prene fine stranded) and large single conductor stranded in the #4 to 250 kcmil range. I currently use either a utility knife or knipex electricians shears. I don't like that I nick the conductors more often than not.

I think I want this style, but the reviews on most models are not great. Most people either report tool failures, dull blades, or poor performance on soft cable sheaths. https://www.amazon.com/Arolax-Cable-Stripping-Tool-Circumferential/dp/B0756T8C2W/ref=psdc_553398_t3_B00OC1UFSU

I also like these, although they are really bulky for the task and a bit more than want to spend. I'm not sure how'd they do on soft sheath either. https://www.ebay.com/itm/THOMAS-BETTS-368-CK-Cable-Strip-Tool-1-TO-1000-MCM-AWG-Cable/184565964448?hash=item2af8fd1ea0:g:aigAAOSwGLVfyovo

Anybody a have a suggestion for something? USA made and sub $100 is the preference.

I have one similiar to the first one posted. Had it for years and it works ok but all I use it on is regular wire not fine strand. Dont recall what brand it is? yellow handle with red metal bade cover. worked well with copper and al wire. 500mcm was the biggest I ever used it on.

battery cable/welding lead use this to cut the length, clean, non ragged end. Stripping pocket knife, those cables as you know are hefty. First cut around, then slit.

I think these came from summit racing, sold for building the SS braided fluid lines.

I have one like the first and like it.  Beats a utility knife for sure.  Use it for battery cable and 3 and 4 wire cord when changing out plug ends on power cords.  Use it several times a month.  Not perfect but big improvement over a utility knife

Pep - I have a couple of cable cutter like those. Great for cutting, but not so good for getting the score around the sheath without hitting the conductors. I agree they do make it much easier to cleanly pull the insulation off.

I think I'll try the Jokari (Germany). I think that what you have Slip. Just have to decide which version

I don't have one of those style insulation trimmers. I do use my Klein ratcheting cable cutters to cut welding cables very cleanly and with the ratcheting action you can trim insulation carefully without going too deep and then use the release to open them up. They also worked very well cutting heavy power cables nice and square.
I wouldn't have spent $200 for them on my own but they were gifted to me by a friend.

I like the Klein design, but my industrial electrician buddy says they only cut thermoplastic insulation and struggle on SO cable elastomer rubber sheaths.

Autocorrect has destroyed my ability to spell, not that there was much of it to start with...

These showed up. Went with the $23 ones. Didn't have a chance to try it yet. The spring on the cable hook is something fierce and it kind of hard to determine the knife stickout are my only initial observations.
