If Italy's economy fails, then the European Union is done. Worse yet, if their banking system fails, there is not enough money in the EU or IMF to save it. At that point the situation will create a domino effect of banks failing across the world because of Credit Default Swaps (CDS) -- i.e., basically default insurance taken out by Italian banks with other banks across Europe and the world.
