is that a wissota e-7 under all of that ugly shit?
« on: November 18, 2018, 07:56:01 PM »
this ratty old piece of junk was in a pawn shop sitting neglected on a shelf  behind a newer cleaner looking import ginder. i thought it was something decent but didn't know for sure. wiping some of the grunge off didn't really help it's looks  it but a few scrapes with a pocket knife on the tag  gave me a clue. a little searching on the internet and i knew for sure, a wissota!

the first  and hardest part of the project was uncovering this. lots of scrubbing, goo gone and a brush got me to this. when i knew this could be salvaged i decided the rest of it was worth doing right.  it told me i had a 1977 wissota e-7 1/2 hp 7 inch grinder!

Wissota's are damned good grinders and very commonly found in commercial metal fab shops.

pretty sure the only care  this thing saw since 77 was  replacing stones, a paint brush and maybe  a cord. layers of dirt, stone dust, metal dust and stickers covered the poor old girl. she growled pretty good when running but it quieted some when i oiled it.  it didn't not want to surrender but i did get it apart. now it really looks like a heap.

You will like it once re-assembled. If it is missing end guard covers consider making some out of heavy gauge sheet metal. Easy to make and will work fine. Not as difficult to fab as heavier steel too. Once made it will not matter anyway right.  ;)

Good job Harlan -- well worth the effort. If you rebuild it, your grandchildren will still be using it; guaranteed.

Nice grinder.

But, there's very few grinders I don't say that about.  :D

An industrial brand not many know of or are aware is a premium grinder was a buy well made Harlan.

I cannot tell you the hundreds of Wisssota grinders that had OSHA violations I wrote as a state safety inspector years ago. I am fairly sure that for a period of time Snap-On grinders were re-badged Wissota's.

You selected the wrong color if wanting original though, gold hammer tone would have been much closer.  ;)

oh, it had the wheel shields/guards. it was all complete except for the rests. more on them later.

after reassembly and  a test run my hunch was right. new bearings made it smooth and quiet!

off came the cord and on with some paint!

it was actually green, ::)

it was the same color as my 1/4 hp wissota but i doubted i would find green so hammered silver/grey is what we get. ;D
