Been a little sidetracked. Conductor Jr. was diagnosed with cancer, specifically T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, back in September. We had him transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital the first week of October and have barely been home since. I literally can’t remember my birthday sometimes.

He had a softball sized tumor in his upper chest cavity that was putting pressure on his heart, lungs, and pinching off his airway. Local Doctors diagnosed him with everything from strep throat to asthma. By the time it became obvious that something more serious was wrong, the tumor was huge and it had started in his bones. If it had went another month without detection his prognosis wouldn’t have been too good. He’s responding well to treatment and things are looking a lot better, but he’s got another year and a half of regular treatment ahead of him at a minimum. His bones are clearing up and the tumor has shrank from 16cm down to 3cm. He has a PET Scan and a bone marrow biopsy next week, so we’ll have a little better progress report shortly.

Just wanted to see some familiar faces

I’ve never been so devastated in all my life. Having to tell your little boy he has cancer is not something you can ever possibly prepare for. The hardest moment of my life was when he asked me what happens when you die. Knowing he’s asking because he knows it’s a very real possibility and telling him he’s way too young to think about stuff like that isn’t a good enough answer anymore. Talk about learning to cherish every day and not taking a single moment in life for grant it.

Thank the Lord his condition is dramatically improving and his odds are good. He’s not out of the woods yet, but things are looking about as good as they can right now.

When I saw you are back I was pleased to see you back. Then I read the rest of the story and it is heartbreaking. I also don't know what to say but I admire your courage and hope all the prayers help - I believe they do.

Thanks guys. I tell you the kid is amazing. His strength and courage has been a real inspiration to me. He’s treated this whole ordeal like a minor inconvenience that he just wants to get behind him so he can get on with his life. Attitude makes a huge difference believe it or not.

We haven’t had any time to spend in the shop and it’s not an ideal environment for someone who white cell counts aren’t far from zero. He’s developed a love for guns and we make it a point to shoot every weekend. He got a Ruger 9mm from Santa and he saved his birthday and Christmas money and bought himself an AR. Some people scoff at the idea of a 10 year old with an AR or a handgun, but he takes safety very seriously and it keeps his mind on something other than cancer.

We built a pretty sweet 870 Tactical recently and we just ordered the supplies so we can learn to properly mount a scope (alignment bars, levels, lapping rods, etc). I guess we’re going to be kitchen table gunsmiths, lol

Glad to hear the treatment seems to be working for your son.  I can't imagine having to go through that with my daughters, but my friend's 21 year old son was just diagnosed with a tumour that sounds to be almost identical to your son's.  The doctors initially treated it as sleep apnea until a nurse pushed for the chest xray.  He has Downs Syndrome and often doesn't speak up about pain or things that aren't normal healthwise.  Today is day 4 of his chemo.

Best of luck for your son's solid recovery, and good to see you back here.

Bless his heart. One of the hospital kids we met with lymphoma is a deaf/mute. It’s infinitely harder to know something is wrong when a kid can’t communicate.

Ironically, what prompted us to demand further testing with Junior was his insistence on sleeping in a fetal position because it hurt his chest if he slept any other way. Come to find out the tumor was laying on his airway if he tried to sleep on his back or side and laying face down allowed his airway to remain open. I live in an area where 2 neighboring towns add up to 5,000 or so people and in the last 2 years we’ve had 3 kids with different types of lymphoma and 1 with the nearly identical Acute Lymphoblastic Lukemia. Makes one wonder if this doesn’t play some role:

Glad you are back, sad to hear about your son, but glad he is doing better.

Sometimes misdiagnosis can be fatal. Our 3 1/2 year old grandson was misdiagnosed several times before they realized he had a staph infection. It spread throughout his body and settled in his hip. He ended up with Toxic Shock Syndrome and  almost died, but recovered.

Got some fantastic news this week. His PET Scan came back completely clear and not a trace of live cancer cells could be found in his body. His white cell counts were near zero, too low to get a bone marrow biopsy, but they are coming up and should be high enough to get one this week. If it comes back clear as well, he will officially be in remission!

We went to Cincinnati last Thursday for what was supposed to be a 1 day visit, but he spiked a fever that afternoon and we just got home this evening. Sucks getting caught off guard like that, but I’ll gladly sleep in a hospital chair forever if that’s what it takes.

He’s still got a long row to hoe, but things are certainly looking up  O:-)

It’s really not bad at all. I researched the top pediatric cancer hospital. Didn’t matter if it was in Huntington or Hong Kong. Boston Children’s Hospital was the top ranked Children’s hospital overall, but 3rd in Cancer care. Cincinnati was #2 overall, but #1 in Cancer. Boston is 16 hours of traffic misery or a flight with at least 1 connection. Cincinnati was ranked higher for what we needed, and I can run Rt. 35 to Washington Courthouse, OH, pick up I-71, and run it all the way to Cincy. I literally leave my house and run 4 lane highway until I hit Exit 3 in Cincinnati which is a mile from the Hospital. Hard to beat that. Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are all  top 5 rated cancer hospitals. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.
