As the title says, photos of off topic stuff that interests me.
Introducing me at four years old, about 1973. Truck is my father's D800 Series (English) Ford. The timber came off trees (Pinus Radiata) from the farm next door and was used to build the house I lived in from five until I left home after university. My father passed away in this house and my mother sold it seven years later in 2007.
-
Looks a lot like a C series Ford cab, tilts forward for service. Quite a load there, probably steered easy that way!
-
Wow you were young then.
-
If you were only 4 in the photo I am guessing you are a big boy now, I mean as in physically a big man.
-
Not much taller than the tire. I bet that fresh sawn lumber smelled good. How straight does lumber that species of tree stay after it dries?

Yes, cab tilted forward. Only six miles from the sawmill to home.

Stopped growing at 6'. I was beanpole shape until I went to university and discovered beer. Now ... "round is a shape right?"

It stays very straight after drying. 90% of timber used in NZ is pine. It doesn't really smell by the time it is dried. Freshly milled it smells pine-y.

Some marketing photos taken for our stormwater designers this weekend.
Big stormwater wetland/pond we designed (10 acres). Two inlets with big rock filters before flowing into the main pond with islands before flowing out to the harbour. The islands are linked by pedestrian bridges and the walkway, open to the public, is about a third of a mile circuit.
-
1. Rock lined stormwater swale
2. Stormwater treatment pond from another job
3. Roadside "wet" stormwater treatment swale planted in various wetland species
4. Art work from one of our projects a couple of years ago. It represents a Spinifex, a coastal grass, seed pod that blows along the beach to spread. We weren't involved in the design of this one
-
I've missed your pix.

1. & 2. Drain widening and landscaping through local golf course
I then went and took some photos down at the Mount Main Beach

1. Surfer
2. Local watching the surfers
3. One of my co-workers testing the supplementary battery system for his electric skateboard. He did just over 60km (37miles) on one charge. On fine days he rides it 9km (5.5miles) to work.

Local crane and hiab company posted this today.
-
This popped up on FB today.
"So.. This is what happens when a unexploded World War 1 artillery shell accidentally goes through your concrete crusher"
-
Seems like an expensive way to crush concrete.
-
Wow it jacked that jaw crusher up bad.
-
That's awesome, assuming no one was hurt that is.

The comments were no one hurt, the guy driving the excavator loading the crusher needed new pants. No damage to the actual jaws of the crusher but everything else is toast.

The local steel mill here used to take baled army scrap via rail from cali. After the melt shop was blown apart for the about 10th time do to large live ordnance in the bales, they put the kibosh on taking that scrap anymore. My friend ran the bridge crane in the melt shop for 38 yrs and said it would about knock the crane off the rails when it happened. I'm glad we don't have to worry about buried bombs in the fields here.

It's amazing that no one was seriously hurt by that explosion. The carnage looks almost surreal -

Actually, I am thinking that is a Model B (1932) the give away being the gas tank low and in the back, tail lights too, A tail lights were fender mounted.

When did it dawn on her.
:))
I'm not sure when the idea dawned on her but she did say today she started on her birthday in October and her next birthday will be the first time she will get to sleep in.
-
That is pretty cool starting on her birthday. Does she take the same scene everyday or or from different places?
I think that would make a really interesting book.
-
She shoots from different places. Here are some of her photos from the series.

She does some really nice work.

Saturday, another dawn shoot with Annmarie. Overcast and the planned photo didn't come off but got a few.

Recently installed 3D pedestrian crossings in a busy pedestrian area on the waterfront.

It is not that obvious in the daylight. I haven't driven over it a night yet.

Today I was looking for some photos of a trip to Adelaide a few years ago. I didn't find them but I did find a whole lot of random ones.
1. Sign for the guys selling watermelons on the side of the road last summer
2. Submerged arc welding of a 40mm (1.5") plate for a bridge girder
3. Shadow, a friend's dog
4. A MAN stock truck demonstrator
-
Nice beads on that submerged arc. How many passes to finish that 1.5" plate? I used to assist a welder using submerged arc to weld sections of large feedwater heaters for the nuke plants. Welds were x-rayed at random spots and at all cross joints.
-
I`d love to watch that welder at work.

The TBM belonging to the museum they acquired in the USA in 1959 and made it airworthy in the 80's. The annual airshow at Chino at Chino is a must see. I spent quite a bit of time at and flying out of Chino and just about everyday you see multiple warbirds flying.

Pretty impressive montage.
https://www.haldavisphotography.com/ (https://www.haldavisphotography.com/) took 4 hours worth of photos from the same spot and combined them to make this single picture featuring a bunch of the arrivals from this Sunday at EAA Airventure in Oshkosh.
-
That is the most congested airspace I've ever seen. ;D
It is amazing to listen to the controllers sequencing and assigning landing instructions at Oshkosh during prime times for arrivals. They have painted an orange and a green dot at different location and distances on the main runway. They don't use "N" numbers as call signs and instead call out plane colors and high wing or low wing and sometimes manufacturer. They will call out land on the numbers or green dot or orange dot so several planes can land on the same runway at the same time. They have rolled the grass to compact it along between the paved runways and taxiways and they have planes turn off the runway onto the grass to clear the runway as soon as possible so more can land. It is amazing to listen to and watch as Wittman becomes the busiest airport in the world during Oshkosh.
Here is a link to the live cams and it will show you how amazing the place is.

Good thing you told us it was a rocket launch or wouldn't of had a clue. Awesome picture.

The payload was a rideshare mission placing another Earth-imaging satellite for BlackSky’s constellation, a satellite for a new maritime tracking constellation, and two United States Air Force research satellites into orbit.

So a friend of mine drives a heavy haulage transporter. He did this shift last week not far from my house. Forestry hauler loaded up, shifted half a mile to the road then two miles down the road. He disconnected the dolly and backed it in off the road 100' to the new skid site. Total weight transporter and hauler 116 tons.

That fishing rod storage is totally "out of the box" thinking. It's an amazing idea and design, and even more amazing that the company's management actually let them go ahead and put it into production. --- Cool!!!!

For the crew of Tanker 134
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
– Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

Right, something a bit less sombre.
Stock car teams racing. Real stock cars that is, ones that hit each other. Basically sprint cars with armour. 100 points for first across the line, 40 for 2nd, then 25, then 20, the 10. Teams usually have one or two runners and the rest are blockers. There are some rules but it is the most brutal form of speedway. Spectacular hit on the runner starts at 2:40.
Another video from the same event with nearly no finishers and an engine letting go causing a white out.

Nice "rat rod" -- some great ideas in that build. I think in the US the Rat Rod craze has reached its peak and is beginning to wane. Went to a few shows last year and the number of Rust and Rat Rods were much lower than in previous years. Just like the motorcycle craze in the early 2000s, it's pretty much played out.
On the other hand, the vintage pickup truck builds are going through the roof. Along with the vintage 60s and 70s models, 1980s and 90s trucks are making a comeback and are being actively restored and modified.
Are you seeing a resurgence in pickup builds as well down in Australia and NZ? I know utes are always popular --

Yeah I’ve seen the 80s square bodied chevys selling for more than I paid for my 86 when it was new.

Last weekend, Saturday started off at Round 1 of the Counties Classic Offroad Racing series. Ever since I've been involved in offroad racing, 14 years, Counties Manakau Club have been talking about building a stadium style track. It has finally come to fruition with this being the first event on their new track at Colin Dale Park, below the flight path to Auckland Airport.

By the looks of it that little sled won't be able to stop it easily. A proper sled set up with grousers would be able to stop that thing quick.

Another photo from Saturday. I followed this nicely restored Beetle, in matt khaki, on my travels in the afternoon. They appeared to be using it as a wedding car.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210315/175d8f6bdd134e2e9fac97a3a0db98db.jpg)

When it is not quite in focus, it is a bit too dusty and you are zoomed out too far and have to crop it too much, try monochrome.

This one is better, out of the camera rather than the first that is taken and edited on the phone.

58 Fairlane going to its new home a few days ago. Manual 427.
-
Nice. Some years ago i helped a mate put an ex 58 cop car back together with a 428 4 spd.
-
Interesting. But isnt that 1958 Fairlane a modern car, Mustang maybe, with front and rear clips added? The windshield isnt close, nor is the roof, and it is really low?
-
Carjam says Country of Origin is South Africa, first Registered in Australia in 1958, first registered in New Zealand in 2007. The roof line is definitely not stock. The VIN starts 7A8 which comes back as a 2005 rebuild VIN number.
Edit - Mike has obviously made a name for himself for being careful transporting this type of precious cargo as he posts this type of photo fairly regularly. Other times it is as simple as a flat pack garage.

If you're feeling blue, how about some orange. Photo thanks to Paul at the V-Dub Shoppe.

I'm going to post this in here to try and keep it all together.
This morning I flew out of Tauranga at 6am to Christchurch on holiday. This weekend was supposed to be the National Offroad Racing Finals, but due to Covid restrictions, for the second year in a row they have been cancelled. I did consider cancelling my holiday but since I have so much accumulated annual leave that I'm constantly being hassled about taking it, I decided to still go.
Picked up my rental car and headed south. It was not quite what I was expecting. I had booked a small SUV and thought I was getting a Mitsubishi ASX. I was quite keen to try a petrol version of this vehicle because I drive a diesel version for work. I ended up with this Holden Trax. It is one of the new breed of small turbochsrged petrol engined vehicles. It is only 1400cc but goes really well.

An explanation on the Upper Waitaki Scheme above the Waitaki River requires a map and several hours. So working downstream, the biggest dam is Benmore.

This is a 100m (300') high earth dam that generates 540MW.

Crossing Benmore.
Next downstream is Aviemore Dam. It is composite structure with to be e north end, sitting on rock, being concrete and the south end being earth. It is 40m (120') high and generates 220 MW.

Both dams were built in the 1960's.
The final dam in the scheme is the Waitaki Dam. It was completed on 1935. It is a concrete dam and produces 205MW. It was the last dam project completed in New Zealand without the help of mechanised equipment.

This morning at 4am-ish I looked out the window and saw that there was 100% cloud cover so canned the idea of sunrise photos of the derelict oyster boats on Bluff Harbour and went back to sleep. At a more civilised hour I went to E Hayes a hardware in town. Norman Hayes, one of the directors, was a friend of Bert Munro's and helped him build many parts for his bikes. Consequently, E Hayes have ended up with a lot of Bert's memorabilia, including Bert's "World's Fastest" Indian.
