Remington 870 Tactical Build
« on: January 19, 2019, 03:22:23 PM »
Thought I’d share a couple pics of the 870 JR. and I finished recently. I’m partial to shotguns and just wanted something to have fun with, Evan if it is a little over the top.

We started with a basic 870 Tactical and added a Volquartsen Non-Mim Extractor, Blackhawk/Knoxx Gen 3 stock and foregrip, Aimtech Warhammer Gen 2 rail, Police grade carrier latch spring, Phase 5 tactical follower, and See-All Tritium Night Sight (Delta Model).

It’s a little chunky, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot and when I open the safe it’s the first gun that grabs everyone’s attention. Most of the components were picked up on Cyber Monday which saved me about $150.

The See-All sight turned out to be pretty sweet for a shotgun build. It’s low profile, offers quick target acquisition, offers unlimited eye relief and is parallax free, provides decent low light performance, requires no batteries so there’s no buttons to fool with in a pinch, and it can be windage/elevation adjusted if you want to set it up as a slug gun. Tip of the triangle is the point of aim on the Delta model, but there is a 3 line crosshair version as well.

I was a little nervous about straying from the norm, but I’m glad I did. It’s not for every build, but it worked out awesome on this one. It’s unique and really turned out to be the cherry on top IMO.

I should have gotten some pictures along the way, but really wasn’t thinking about making a thread of it at the time.

Hard to beat a Wingmaster for a solid all-purpose gun.

I’ve been eyeing an 11-87 to use primary as a trap gun. The Sportsman’s Club we belong to put in a very nice skeet range last year and is going to start having matches this year. I’m thinking skeet shooting would be a nice hobby this summer seeing how JR. won’t be playing Baseball or Football this year and we can practice in the back yard.

the 870 is a pretty rugged firearm. I used the cheapo 870 express for duck hunting back in the early 80s. Kmart sold them for @$130-150. Use it for a few seasons then sell it to a pawnshop and go buy another one. We never cleaned them just throw it in boat and go. ;D  It was time for replacement when the rust dust blinded you when fired.  ;D

I loved my Wingmasters. But I love my 1100's more. I just sold off my last 16 ga wingmaster last week. I was offered $ 425.00 for it. It was a 1950's plain barrel mod. choke in 85% + condition.  That's a sweet gum you got there. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to own that here in N.Y. being that it a gun and all.

My parents bought me a 12ga 870 magnum Wingmaster for Christmas 30 years ago. Then 2 years ago I won a drawing at a casino for a 12ga 870 Express with a synthetic stock That I like for throwing in the truck if I'm heading into the mountains behind our house.

I was slow to accept synthetic stocks. Guns were supposed to be wood and good ones were like works of art. Synthetics were cheap and unsightly.

A gun is a tool. After years of walking through the woods worrying about banging up my rifle, I decided to give synthetic a chance. It didn’t take long to learn to appreciate the utility of a synthetic stock and stainless barrel. They’ll never be the beauties that high quality wood stocks are, but the durability and piece of mind are a fair trade for my needs.

That is nice and tactiCOOL...

I am not much of a shotgun guy, even though upland was the only hunting I ever liked. I use a beat to death WesternField 16ga double. No worries with that old boy. It also came right up to my shoulder like it was intended to be there. I also have my uncles Ithica 37, in my eyes the finest pump made.

I have my father's 870 Wingmaster 3" magnum with a ventilated rib site that he bought back in the '60s.  My memory is not perfect but I seem to remember it being delivered in the mail.

Yup -- Back in the day my dad and grandpa received all their Sears JC Higgins and later Ted Williams long guns in the mail.

Gee, how did we ever survive when you could order a gun out of a catalog and have it shipped to you via US Mail with no background check.
