Post by: Jamesyarbrough on September 08, 2019, 11:30:35 AM
Does anyone know what years the =v= series was made and by whom?

Whats the difference between =v= and -v-?

Just going threw some of my old tools and organizing.  Most of my stuff is g or vn vm  or v inverted v but i have some =v= and im trying to build a set.  And well i just was wondering

The =v= tools were made starting after WW2 by Moore Drop Forge. The -v- series with part numbers were made in the same factory after Moore was sold to another company.

Iirc the -v- was in use by the mid 70's and ran until the danahar era started in the early 90's or so.

Lauver will know the entire history of that Craftsman series-- send Gary a PM and I'm sure he will respond quickly.

I got everything i needed. Really i was just wondering which one was first.  Thanks again guys! Now i need to finish this set. Still need a 1/2 drive ratchet, spinner, and breaker bar. Got the complete set of sockets and box and an extension. The rest should be easy to scratch up

That set represents Craftsman in its "heyday". Really good quality, design, and selection at that point in time.

Im thinking of a flying v rat for it. I just kinda like them idk if that will match the box tho. One of those older box ratchets would he nice too,  but i really like the flying v

Probably the right call, but I suppose an RHFT could technically belong as well.
IIRC the crown logo was still in use when the RHFT was first introduced.

The Kromedge sets were definitely made in SAE, and in the same form-factor as the metric set.

I don't show a similar SAE socket/wrench set in the catalogs from that time. The metric socket/wrench set you show was probably considered an add-on to exiting, more expansive SAE sets. Hence the selection and packaging complemented the SAE sets. Sears made another set along the same line and form-factor;... the Whitworth set. The price was the same as the metric set ($32.95) in the 1960 Hand Tool catalog.

The 1966 catalog shows a similar SAE set, but without the wrenches -- that's about as close as they came in SAE to match the Whitworth and Metric offerings.
