WAS THIS WHAT THEY MEANT BY "A LONG COOL LEOPARD'?

From Gisborne Photo News No 181 16th July 1969
"How would you like this in your backyard? It is the new Mercedes Benz tanker to carry beer from Hastings to Gisborne for Leopard Breweries. The complete unit is the largest carrier of draught beer in the country and was specially built for the Wairoa and Gisborne delivery aea. It has capacity of 4,600 gallons, the equivalent of three normal size tankers. The unit is 59 feet 4 inches long, has a maximum permitted weight of 36 tons and is supported by 26 wheels (12 doubles and 2 singles). It has built in refrigeration which enables the beer to be held at a constant temperature for several days if necessary. The driver's cab is fully air-conditioned and contains two bunks, draw curtains, blinds on the windows, reading lamp, head rests, shaving point etc. Beer is transferred to smaller tankers for local delivery, under pressure and all compartments are filled at the same time. Total cost was approximately $50,000. The driver is Ken Burgess."

From the comments on the source website, not the best beer of the day!

Somehow the term bulk beer doesn't evoke the image of quality and taste in my mind.

Still, must have been popular to need a delivery vehicle of that size. By popular I mean cheap.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

Was thinking the same thing when I read the write-up. Left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth just from reading the narrative  -- LOL

In the days before kegs, all brands of beer was delivered to pubs in NZ by tanker, probably up to the late 70s early 80s. I can remember a mate of Dad's parking the Dominion Breweries tanker he drove outside our beach house and coming in for lunch one Christmas holidays.

Rawhiti on the Waikato River approaching Hamilton bridge. The round cylinders on the fore deck is news print for "The Waikato Times" this came from Australia via one of the South Island ports. The floating crane and the barges of sand and shingle she would have picked up just down the river.

"The rear and sides of the turrets of a German Tiger I were formed from a single piece of armour plate, bent into a horseshoe shape,  This had the advantage of avoiding any joints, which might form a weak point,  but required specialised heavy duty equipment,  Openings for the rear escape hatch and pistol ports were machined into it later."
