This is the quote to fix my 1947 KR Wilson 50 ton press.
CYLINDER
Disassemble, inspect and quote to repair
BARREL
Heavy scoring; Hone ID to clean
ROD
Light scoring, dings and pitting; Polish only (no
seals)
PISTON
Excessive clearance after hone; Machine center
section for W/B and polish
HEAD
Guide has crack will pilot will have excessive
clearance to newly honed barrel; Bore, bush guide
with aluminum bronze and polish
OTHER
Adjustment gear has heavy wear; Debur and polish
Assemble w/customer furnished seal kit and test
HAND PUMP
Disassemble, inspect and quote to repair
PUMP SHAFT
Light wear; Polish only
PUMP BODY
Seal area has pitting; Polish
Assemble w/customer furnished seals and test

There's a lot of work listed there. Bore and bush guide head is a big job and probably almost half the money. They need cut for a thicker wear band on the piston since they're honing probably .020" out.
Those two things require a bit of a machinist to pull off. They also probably have a much slicker polishing setup than your average garage. They are probably better than good at getting the pump seat recut to seal and not bleed off.
Yes they're proud of that job, but not out of line in my opinion. They'll have over 10 hrs billed labor on it total.
You could take the barrel to anybody with a sunnen or engine hone that knows how to use it and get it cleaned up. That's not rocket appliances. The clearance issue that creates is the problem. Presses are already bad for unnecessary side load -> why you cly is scored. Having a sloppy piston would trash it again in a hurry. Hydraulics aren't nearly as tight tolerance as most people believe. Fitting a wear band is a plus/minus .005 job maybe .010. It's all stuff you could do on your lathe if you felt brave. You could get away without polishing the rod, it may just weep some.

All things considered, I don't believe they're trying to hornswoggle ya by that quote. Just an expensive field of work, and they're doing work for the mills where downtime is $100k+++/hr so a $1500 repack is nothing.

Well I called the boss today and chatted for a while , he went through what was worn on it. No surprise as its 73 years old. He reckons it`ll last for a long time yet with the repairs.
I got him down to 1200 cash so wtf I`ll rescue the old bugger.
Guess I know where my stimulus check is going.

That's still very reasonable money to be in a 75 ton press. And a real deal nice one too. :cool2:

all you need to do is fix it. once that is done you will have no need to use it.

Got it back today and to correct my earlier post it`s a 50 tonner.
It held 2000lbs of pressure for 24hrs so it looks like it`s gunna work.
