Found a toolroom lathe
« on: August 24, 2019, 10:54:11 AM »
Still working on it , I`m pretty sure it`s a Rivitt 1020s Or it could be a 1020f I`m not sure
http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=2379.
It looks to be in good shape I cannot feel any ridge on the ways . It`s filthy from sitting in a old warehouse.
The guy that has it I`ve know and liked for years , he says it works .
It comes with loads of tooling which is good, granted I`ve got a ton of clean up/ restoring work to do on it.
Fantastic quality lathe in 1950 they were priced at $50,000 so only the gov bought them.
If we can work out a reasonable price and it passes a closer inspection I`ll be bringing it home on the proviso that nothing major is wrong with it.
The plan would be to get it home in the shop where I can see it in the light and clean it up and lube the mechanisms and check all the electronics and drive belts.
Then I`d bring the owner over and have him turn it on so we can both check it out.
If it`s all good it`s mine if not I`ll take it back.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

The rust is a fuking crime but it looks to be complete and not too trashed. The saddle will need to be lifted off and the rust removed before you run the carriage back and fourth to keep that crap from getting embedded in the female saddle ways. Check for slop in the bushings on the vari sheaves (same as your DOALL). Check the tailstock quill taper for gouges from tooling spinning inside. Look for shims between the bottom half of the tailstock where it slides to offset for taper turning. They would be there to make up for wear and get the centers back in line for height. Look for cracks in the compound rest and/or big scars if it's been crashed into the running chuck jaws. Godspeed.

It's a beauty of a lathe. Probably just as good, if not better, than a Monarch 10EE series, but much harder to maintain and find parts for.

Most say they`re better quality than the 10EE . The Rivitt has the advantage of a reeves drive instead of tubes and a lot of old electronic stuff for the variable speed on the Monarch.

I`m still working / haggling on it.
Had another long look at it today , looks like it used to be a USAF machine . The build date on it is 1959.

Got some bits home plus a sweet old cabinet that was behind the lathe in the dark, ended up being full of collets and a few other bits.
I`m having trouble loading pix for some reason so im trying to trick puter into doing it.

That is a good way to go. When we bought a Blanchard grinder it was wired 480V and we had 240V 3ph in the shop. It was easier to get a step up transformer than trying to move 50 yr old wiring on the motor so it could run on 240V.

Heck ya. No better feeling than turning cranks on something that's been forgotten for too long. Glad to see the move happened without incident. That transition on and off a trailer is always the worst part.

Now you can paint it a proper gray color when you take it all apart to clean the rust out.  ;D

What it boils down to is I have 440 and  220 3 phase outlets to suit each machines needs.
Although I may have to upgrade the 10 hp to a bigger unit of I want to run Chomper.
Hard to justify that expense though.

Also got another Rivett book for an armature lathe in the original cover.

And yes I tore it all apart. It's now spotless through and through.

You won't ever need coolant. Brush applied oil is plenty for everything but production. Flood coolant just makes a giant mess.

You want that brake to operate, and be able to be switched off. It's handy to have one so you don't have to use your hand to slow the chuck (bad habit).

So would you wire the brake up independently? The braked motors we have at work simply lock up without power to them, seems like you would need to spin the lathe unpowered at times.

There may or may not be a switch somewhere in the controls to turn it's function off independent form the main motor control. The Hardinge brake uses a pad that's pushed on a drum by a solenoid (opposite of yours) and has an ON/OFF switch up top. It's not a positive brake, but it's nice to switch off for fiddling around with chucks and such.

Got the motor assembly back in after the sparky checked it all out, replaced the hokey power cord junction box and connected the cord directly to the machine and got a quickie freshen up of the coolant sump/pump assembly.
Sparkies coming back over and we`ll re connect everything and plug it in to do a run check with the drive belts not attached.

Turns out so far 2 of these smaller fuses are bad and a transformer was wired up wrong.
Tomorrow new fuses and hit it again
