Another hypothetical project: 4 cyl 2 stroke boxer engine
« on: July 22, 2019, 09:54:24 AM »
Is there any reason the VW Beetle boxer engine couldn’t be used as a platform to build a 2 stroke engine? What is required of a 2 stroke block that the VW engine doesn’t have? The cylinders, heads, pistons, and intake systems obviously have to be changed. I don’t have much experience with 2 stroke engines.

it would require a ton of work to change any 4 Cylce eng to a two cycle. Would require different heads, cam, cylinders, distributor drive.....

What advantage would the two stroke be over what the engine is now? It might be feasible if you have a full on machine shop, foundry and a vault full of cubic dollars.

2 strokes don’t have cams. Custom cylinders are made all the time on racing engines. There’s nothing to a 2 stroke head. Ignition system is no problem.

2 stroke engines run at higher RPM and they’re more powerful.

I’m sure there are 2 stroke engines with cylinders that would fit with a little modification.
