Vintage Tac score
« on: October 14, 2018, 04:54:43 PM »
Picked up this sweet vintage Herman H. Sticht co. inc of New York N.Y. hand held tachometer today off offer up for $20.
I was in need of something to find out the speed of the bottom pulley on my drill press.
I really wanted a digital laser one but how could I resist

I guess you efforts to find a digital tach were going in circles then.

Did you measure the speed of the bottom pulley?
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

I sure hope you're not spinning that old camelback 3100...

that's what it read on the biggest bottom pulley.
But I think I effed up, the small ball on the tac had decayed to an unusable blob so I put the bigger wheel on it and measured it with that.
It has a 6 inch circumference but without knowing the original diameter of the smaller tip no math can help.

Or can it?

Yeah it can be figured out.
The gauge reads the exact rpm of the input shaft correct?

Yep I placed the wheel on the pulley and got 3100.

It should read directly. Stab it up against the end of the closed chuck and see what it says.

It does but only with the bigger attachment, won`t that give a different reading than the smaller one?
The instructions say the bigger attachment is for reading feet pr minute.

If that 3100 was measured with the foot per minute wheel all you need is the circumference of the pulley to calculate the RPM.
