3/8" Drive sets
« on: October 06, 2018, 09:41:24 AM »
Did somebody say we needed another thread???

Well, with all the jaw dropping sets that have been displayed in 1/4" and 1/2" drive I thought that 3/8" should have its own showcase. And in 3/8" I can post some. Will have to assemble some of my sets as they're spread out, but at least I can get this party started. Post up what you've got in 3/8" drive!

Here's my original socket set - a 1980 vintage S-K tray set in it's original box. Made during the Dresser Industries era (1969 to 1985). Still have it, it's my go-to work set. Has never let me down.

I attempted to put together a mixed 1/4" and 3/8" S-K Wayne set but couldn't complete it. I ended up selling most of the pieces to give another Wayne collector a crack at it. Here it is at it's best.

A beautiful legacy set --  well done with that purchase Walrus.

Love that S-K Wayne set Bonneyman. Vintage S-K is tough as nails with beautiful chrome. And your set is in mint condition!

Thanks! Being Wayne owned S-K for only 7 years or so there's alot less of it out there then other eras. Making them quite hard to find. The pictured set included other older vintage S-K parts that I found and included till I got the appropriate replacement. Which didn't happen. Someone else has the majority of these pieces now.

While not the original tool kit that came with Toyota FJ40's, in my humble opinion this Japan made Koken 3/8 socket set is an appropriate substitute. And unlike original FJ kits, if you can find them, this one doesn't break the bank. The quality is okay too. The ratchet reminds me of the classic Proto 5249's. Works for me.

Thanks GF, it's an old one, although I don't know exactly when it was manufactured.  I do know the newer Koken tools have a lot more bling.

Yes and this was exactly the one that was needed! Thank you for starting.

Unfortunately I just have have tools not anything that could be gathered into a set in 3/8 unless you count a rail of sockets as a set.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

I've got a nice Bonney 3/8" collection (much more extensive than in 1/4" or 1/2").
I just need time to get them together for a family shot.

By George, I’d like to see some Bonney sets too. That’s a brand I’ve never collected. Here is a Snap-on Ferret set that I put together from a box I found at an estate sale. Snapmom generously donated the sliding Tee.

Here's my Bonney sockets. SAE top rows, metric bottom rows. Mostly 12 pt Loc-Rite. Missing a few metrics (deep 18 mm, shallow 19 mm. Hint, hint.  ;D)
No box. The one shallow set came in a plastic socket box that literally fell apart the third time I opened it. Since then the sockets have been hanging on pegboard.

My 6 pt Bonney set, backing up my Thorsen socket set for the personal car. And a few other 6 pts, included their 2 spark plug sockets - with rubber inserts intact.

Most of my Bonney ratchets and drive accessories. Older vintage stuff on the left, nice 3/8" flex ratchet and breaker bar there, along with a well-rusted 16" long extension. The more modern stuff includes three 3/8" drive rats (two are users, one is NOS and is put away except for fashions shows like this), a long flex head, and a 3/8" gear in 1/4" body to round out all the extensions, universal, and drive adaptors in the middle.
I do have a long wobble extension that had a damaged knuckle. Seller was pretty bummed about it. But I told him I could use it, so he sold it to me. Took a 1 1/2" used extension and modded the damaged knuckle to take the short ext, then allen screwed it in place. Think it gives me 13+ or so inches total, and without looking close you don't notice the surgery. Don't know where it is at the moment.
