Sometimes in fabricating, one needs the biggest bolt possible, but cannot go 5/8, or 3/4 because the hole would weaken the structure.
That makes sense. Why they’re not more readily available is the big question to me.

Since I said I didn't recall seeing a 9/16 bolt, I thought I would check my individual tap display and darned if don't have a slot for 9/16 fine and course taps.  I have 2 fine but no course.  Apparently I had a couple when I made up the cabinet.

Because they're a (mostly useless) antiquated size. They don't do anything that 1/2" G8 or 5/8 won't do better. Same with #12-24, #5-40, #8-36, and all the other once common screws that have gone the way of the dodo. Finding holes near 9/16" is usually just manufactures grossly oversizing clearance holes for 1/2" bolts to account for wide open fabrication tolerances.
