Any tools you prefer to buy from foreign countries?
« on: May 22, 2020, 11:23:32 PM »
Are there any types of tools you would buy from a foreign manufacturer first before the US ?

For me the only one I can think of is Machetes.
I use them quite a bit around my yard, and I believe the south Americans who use them every day have a better understanding of what they should be.

Aside from the standard Ontario machetes anything that's US made these days usually caters to the knife and outdoors community , most are made by knife companies and are fancier and more expensive than a working machete really needs to be.

The Ontario is known to be a good tool, but is just not my choice.
The 18" is $20+ when a good machete from the 3 major south American manufacturers will run you under $12, the Ontarios are just not on the same level of economical beater tool.

I do normally prefer American made wherever I can, but a machete is an inexpensive working tool that needs to be just hard enough to take a beating yet soft enough to maintain with minimal work and material removal.
I'm not putting down The Ontario knife company as they make a great product, but the south American manufacturers have a better understanding of machetes and how to make a machete that will last but can essentially be disposable if need be.

The Bellota brand is the best of the lot I have seen.

But then I just kinda sharpened one side of my po'boy shovel and use it as a hatchet if need be.

I don't do much wood cutting or hole digging so that is an old shovel already.

Furrin made tools seem to be 97% of my junk
In most all areas of use.  I don't care how old or where from if they work.
Even my pick is a trailer spring welded to a pipe.  It works too.  It will outlast me.

Trailer Spring? Where did you manage to find the magic sized bolt?

I had to order 9/16" bolts from some company in Nigeria .  Can't just use any old stuff on springs.

Interesting,  I don't see bellota machetes much , but I do know they do own Carona now.
I wonder if any of the Carona machetes are made in Colombia by bellota ?

Right now I've just got a couple marbles branded Imicasa machetes ( great tools) and a little guy I made from an old broken saw.

Yesterday I ordered a 5pc assortment of new Colombian surplus machetes from sportsman's guide that are on their way, they're all supposed to be Incolma produced but its pretty much up to them what patterns you get.
For the price it seemed like a great way to try some different patterns.

Wow...  You just ordered about five lifetimes of machetes in my uses.  Tropical area trees are usually sift pulpy wood and a skilled user can get through 6" stuff fast.

My FIL has a hand forged hook type and uses the curved backside to rip up quackgrass off the soccer field.  Its all good with him.

I'm going to keep what I need and give away the others to family or something.
Out of the 5 I mwy only get one that's really useful to me, I know I sure dont need a sugar cane machete if I get one.

I'm with Phil on the German "Channellocks".

Sweden for "Crescent wrenches" and most crimp tools.

France for insulated and precision screwdrivers.

I put a toolbox together of all Asian tools for working on the pedestal automatic waterers in the barn. When working on the innards of them if I drop a tool it will end up 5' underground. I am not going to worry about losing a tool from China, India or Korea down the holes I augered to let the ground heat keep things from freezing to go along with the thermostat controlled heaters in them.

I've been thinking and thinking about it and just can't come up with anything else that I personally would buy.
American manufacturers have me covered for every other kind of tool I need , theres nothing else I feel a foreign manufacturer blows the US out of the water on.

I expected someone to say chainsaws because of say Stihl or Husqvarna, but honestly I don't even know if say McCulloch or Homelite Chainsaws are made here anymore and if none are made here it doesn't count

Indirectly they are too.  Pliers, screwdrivers and probably allen keys.  Each brand has one type of item they do best.

Have several screwdrivers stamped Germany, brand?  But the handles feel superior to most others.  Seen the Knipex but didnt feel I had to buy them, maybe I should have.  Wrenches,  not familiar with the good brands, just what Ive seen in thrifts and pawns,  the fit and finish not even close to older US made stuff.  Probably my age makes me US biased.   Interesting subject.

I already gave the tapanga on the bottom to my neighbor.
At the moment I really only plan to keep the little 14"er and the the billhook, I may decide to keep the 22"er but the large panga I've messed with a bit and I really don't like it.

In digging I don't think they actually manufacture anything but  replacement blades for agricultural equipment.
I think those bellota machetes are probably manufactured by Incolma invermec de in Colombia ( if made in Colombia)

There are loads of different styles.

Not including the heavier more chopping oriented blades theres

Latin
Panga
Tapanga
Cane
Bolo
Billhook
Barong
Colima
And bowie style machetes.

On top of that there are many variations of each pattern made by various manufacturers around the world.

Interapid indicators.
I don't have a "Swiss Miss" fetish like some do (I do not understand the fascination with PB Swiss. They are overpriced and overrated, IMO).

But Interapid are the best. I would say Mitutoyo is #2. I stay away from Starrett indicators, except for their perpendicular models. I don't even know if there is another USA mfg making indicators. Mahr-Federal might, Scherr-Tumico just went out of business.

I agree, while their tools are ok they aren't all that. I bought a bunch of 1/4 bits from PB Swiss, might be ok in a screwdriver, they snap easily in a impact.
