A vice with a soft touch
« on: January 22, 2019, 06:39:04 PM »
Elroy posted this little project a few years ago at the "urinal". The resulting splash back from all the "urinal" experts was typical of the clientele.
While Elroy freely admits these jaws are not durable in the long term, they definitely have their place when a soft yet firm grip is required.
Elroy is refreshing this post simply to show options that can be achieved

First step to achieving that soft yet firm touch is cutting a pair of hard wood blanks

use some transfer screws to locate the attachment points

A drill press action puts the counter bored holes in exactly the right spot

The results are fully rewarding for someone with a brain capable of comprehending the goal at hand

When a firm grip and no jaw marks are imperative

The experts at the "urinal" couldn't quite comprehend the ultimate goal and felt justified in trashing the idea. Elroy trusts the full story is now a little more clear with out all the trash talk from the short sighted experts.

Elroy could have never achieved these results w/o these soft jaws

Nice job! Well done.

Do you keep the vise setup with the soft jaws or swap jaws as needed? I've been thinking of setting up something similar and got sort of stuck on which way to go.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

Elroy typically fabricates 4 sets of wood jaws at a time. Granted these wooden jaws have a limited life. They get swapped out when they fail or when the job calls for the hard bite of the OEM jaws. They're easy to swap back and forth as needed.

Very hand add-on. Sure beats fiddling around with a piece of leather around the part.

What does Elroy use for hot blue solution?

It worked well restoring the black oxide on the Snappy

Couple of points

There is always splash back at the Urinal :))  I don't get it but some folks just like to feel superior

Great idea and certainly cheap and easy once you do the first set or 2

Like the idea that you make several sets at a time.  Set up once and have at it

Never knew there were such things as transfer screws.  I have learned so much from the folks on here.

Soon as I saw the picture, figured you were using hardwood.

Nice pictures as always, how is the "new photobucket" to use?  In the past, uploading was always slow for me.

Elroy did a great job as always on those. He is such a talented guy.
Phil, transfer screws are a must have for tooling work. There are also blind hole transfer screws that are not threaded to locate dowel pin holes and such. They are handy to have in any shop along with transfer punches.

Elroy .............. is such a talented guy.

Not so fast there. Elroy would consider Ray Goodfellows' skill set to be vastly superior and more well developed. He's a also a true gentlemen

I thought Elroy was a moron?!  :))

Now that's a more accurate statement. Just look at the title of this thread. Elroy doesn't know the difference between a vice of bad habits and a bench vise  :-*

as usual, elroy does work.

on a side note, tell elroy he should mount such a nice vise to a workbench rather than the kitchen table!  :))

beautiful S&W

It's a pre-model 36 J-Frame known as a "Chief Special". It dates to 1954. It came into Elroy's possession in poor condition. Fortunately the majority of the damage was on the cylinder

Elroy purchased a replacement ejector rod from Numrich

Elroy thinks it turned out fairly nice

If my vise, a Prentiss, had removable jaws I would copy this in a heartbeat. As it is, I usually place a couple pieces of door shim stock in the jaws.

Nice Chiefs special by the way.
