Big hammer
« on: December 05, 2020, 06:09:10 AM »
Figured I needed a bigger sledge than my 12lb.er.  think the name might be Vaughn?  Sure was getting heavy carrying it to the Habitat Homestore checkout.  Seen heads this big serving as a mini anvil on the bench.   Might carve a handle for it.

Thats one of those tools that seldom gets called on but when you need it you need it.

I'd hate to have to swing that all day.

I like the shape of that.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

That is nice and will do a job on concrete. I used to have to swing a 16 pounder to persuade steel to move.

Sure looks like it says Vaughan to me.
Nice score, reminds me that I need a sledge.
The 4pb drilling hammer just isn't enough sometimes.

So John, you have experience carving handles.  That is a skill I have no knowledge and will try to learn someday

Me too.
I can properly hang a handle and I can carve down a larger handle to a proper slimmer profile, but I have yet to carve one from scratch.

I wasn't even thinking of from scratch, I was talking about just fitting the handle to the head :))

I have tried fitting a few but never liked the results

Have rehandled a few dozen,  made a handful from scratch.  Good sharp drawknife is about all that is needed.  My dad showed me how when 12 or thereabouts.  He would never go to the store if he could make it himself.  I think the easiest is using an old broken handle,  cut it down,  reshape.   On small hammers I use Scott Grandstaffs, tuck under for the bottom shape.

It's easy, and all you really need is a good 4 in hand file / rasp.
To make or shape a small handle you'd want to throw in a spokeshave and a sharp knife.
