So I found this lost soul stuffed under a hedge at work and I`m fixing it up for one of the guys at work.
It`s missing something though as it wont close tight or hold and it won`t retract the jaw the screw just winds out of the body.
I`m having a brain fart day and im too tired to figure it out .

Do you have a locking ring that sits right behind the leadscrew flange?

looks like an exposed screw vise. it probably has a hole for a cotter pin in the shaft. washer and cotter pin after you run it thru the dynamic jaw should fix that part. Don't understand why it wont tighten up? Threads stripped?

No it just had a bunch of washers.

Looks like the screw has had the end broken off. when I put a 1/2 inch thick bunch of washers on the screw it will tighten up.
As for brand, no clue it just says made in U.S.A.
Nice little unit has a pipe jaw cast in as well.
So suggestions as to a neat tidy fix?

From the scarring on the screw behind the thread it looks like a collar rides there in the cavity to open the vise. Far as not closing some close inspection of the threaded insert on the static side will tell you if the insert is stripped or rotating within the casting. Either is possible.
Kind of looks like somebody took it apart before you and lost a part.

Go back to the shrub where you found the vise. Drag a magnet under the shrub until you find the missing piece(s). Then show us what you find.
How small is that vise 2", 3", 4"?

Lance and I are on the same page -- some vises have a lockring or collar right where threads start in the leadscrew, and it bolts to the front of the vise body. Some models don't, but without the front pics it's tough to see if the provision is there.

If it wont tighten I'd say its toast. You can drill an 1/8" hole in the screw and put a cotter pin through it with a washer behind it. That will take care of the opening issue. Too me it looks like it has a drilled and tapped hole through the base for the screw. I've seen these stripped out before.

It's a cheapo, probably from the 50s or 60s when US foundries were trying to market budget lines to compete with the Japanese product arriving at Woolworths and Grants.
I got a whole Dime to bet the threaded insert in the casting is retained by a pin that sheared which will definitely mess up tightening, but we need more views and inspection of the insert to determine if it's stripped.

It does tighten up when I add about an inch of washers just behind the turning handle. Otherwise the screw threads all the way in past the threads and just spins , hence the scratch marks in the untapped part of the screw.
I don`t see any holes for the retaining ring screws.

So the plan.
Turn some more threads on to the screw to it winds up all the way to the face of the hardened washer, then drill and pin the shaft with another hardened washer between the pin and the body.
Yay or Nay?
I know I know a lot of trouble but I feel sorry for the little lost soldier and want to fix him up and get him in a new loving home, proudly mounted to a bench.
Gazza it`s a 3 1/2 inch wide jaw.

I'll go with no, Negative, No Way in Hell and yer kidding.
Throw a shaft collar in there between the handle hub & jaw assembly, better yet a pair of shaft collars with a thrust bearing and make the pathetic lump into a useful bench decoration.

I looked at it and there`s only enough room for a washer so I`ll just tac weld one on there.
