I went to the Cherry Blossom Festival in town this morning. My friends brought their C10 with the 502 crate motor in it over (first photo). Edited photos then took some painkillers (still waiting for an appointment with the specialist to get my knee fixed) and had a nap this afternoon.

One of our surveyors from work came and got some aerial photos of our race track for me today. Looked after the track while a couple of guys did some practice laps. Later some of the local 4wd club turned up and pushed an overgrown track open for us that we want to use in an enduro race we have coming up.
1. Drone
2. Our track
3. 42" tyred 4x4 buggy. 4.0L Lexus/Toyota V8 on Landcruiser diffs
4. It is four wheel steer

Rear steer on that buggy? Is that reclaimed land that had been logged? Great pics.

Yes the buggy has rear steer. The front steers normally with a steering wheel and the rear steers with a joystick. When you let the joystick go it returns the wheels to centre.

The land is part of a 1,700ha (4,000 acre) park owned by the two local councils, Tauranga City Council and Western Bay District Council. Tauranga, and the Western Bay, have been growing at a phenomenal rate. The local rifle range, clay  bird club, model aeroplane club and horse trekking area all got gobbled up by housing developments, both urban and rural residential. It got more and more difficult for these clubs to try and obtain land to operate so, in an unusually moment of fore thought and planning, the two councils got together and bought 1,200ha of production forest about 17 miles out of town. They soon added another 500ha to the park. The park has resource consents for basically all outdoor activities.

The park operates on a three levels, public facilities - off-leash dog exercise area, equestrian tracks, running, walking, mountain bike and motocross tracks; club activities with exclusive leases - Deerstalkers Assn rifle range, clay bird club, model aeroplane club, a club  motocross track and the motorsport area we are part of; and commercial activities - high ropes area.

The area we are in is a 370ha (900 acre) area lease called Te Matai Motorsport Park (Te Matai being the name of the area and one of the roads bounding the area). We have a sub-lease for our track. The Te Matai Motorsport Park is run by an incorporated society (not for profit organisation). The Motorsport park sub-lease areas - our track, two radio controlled car tracks, an auto cross track plus and area of undeveloped tracks that the 4wd club have access to. There is also five miles of formed rally roads, with plans to increase to 12 miles and a large gravel area used for parking, car club events etc.

That is a long winded way to answer your second question, yes the land is harvested production forest. The large heaps are pushed up pine sash etc. These areas have been replanted in pine trees that are about six feet high.

In the motorsport area there is about 40ha (100 acres) of production forest that we can't access. There is 100 ha (250 acre) of mature pine forest with rally roads and other tracks through it that we can use.

Wow. that seems like a pretty sweet deal. Lots of area for fun. Not much public area here in Tx. and what little is available is all off limits to every kind of fun imaginable.

We dropped the trans from a severely battered '81 chev pick up to replace the starter gear ring.  Had to bolt the steering box and front bumper back on just to stop the biggest rattles and clunks.

Tomorrow we try to put junky dumpty back together again.

Started working on a new lamp for the front porch. The lamp that was there when I bought the house was original, but still on the knob and tube system, and none too safely wired at that. The safe replacement works but is ugly as sin. So, I found an old light in an antique shop, that looks appropriate to the house, but needed a new base. Put that together today and got everything ready. But I am going to need to drill a 4" hole for the replacement box and the between the joist hanger I have on hand is missing a part. So, I am putting it off until tomorrow. Pics to come.

My hanging lights are all on cobbled up bases and most had to be rebuilt with new sockets.  This one is an old bleach bottle in a metal frame  hung by a wire loop off the cover plate of the box in the ceiling.   With a halogen bulb it really gets pretty.  I just tried to keep the cobble hanging it discrete.

Working on my 96 Chevy pickup, replacing spring U bolts on rear axle.  Truck is backed up to my garage.  Got the wiring tore apart in the garage, so can't use the air compressor right now, to run the impact.   Wanted to fill my carry tank with as much pressure as my old compressor up in the shop can do.   Only got to 50psi,  found a leak in the hose.  Cut another piece of hose,  nipple wrong size, to go in my shut of valve.   Found another nipple, and dropped the  hose clamp, was going to use.   Went to the garage, found another clamp.  Got that together,  found the quick disconnect on the hose I was going to use is stuck.  Dug out another piece of hose.  Found the lost hose clamp.  Got pressure up to 110psi,  impact would not budge the nuts on the U bolts.  Tried it again and the quick connect on the hose blew off.  Gave up and cut off u bolts with DeWalt grinder.   About 2 hours for ten minutes work,  sound normal?

No I always just cut them to start with. In the north it’s a waste of time to try and take the nuts off.

If I was still working in the shop, would have cut them off immediately.   Just trying to save one or the nuts,  being too thrifty, when it is my dime

I always grab the torch and first heat them myself. That might be the wrong thing to do, but it is what I have done. I suspect it is wrong and steals the temper from what I am sure are hardened bolts.
You boys better hold on cause I'm gonna have to stand on it!

So it now looks like this out front

(Sorry about the sideways pics, I have been using Tinypic.com and while free, it only puts up landscape format and won't let you resize. Does anyone else have a better photo host thats free?)
