Looking for a Kent Moore J-22598.
« on: July 25, 2023, 09:55:01 PM »
I have a friend that is looking for a Kent Moore J-22598 tool. This tool is used to remove the outer   sleeve on a 1968 (and others) GM tilt steering columns.

So far nothing has showed up on ebay.

I found a picture of the Kent Moore J-22598 in use and read that Kent Moore-J-22708 is a look alike tool.

Probably rare as hen's teeth, and you may have to make one.

Here's a "how to" that first suggests using two large flat blade screwdrivers, but if that fails due to heavy corrosion or rust jacking, it provides guidelines for making a simple tool using commonly available parts.

Good luck!

Wel my friend is working on a 68 Cadilliac with a tilt-telescopic steering column with side turn lights. He knows much more about tilt column's than i do but i don't think you have to remove the outer shell just to replace the turn signal switch.

There is another tool needed to depress the locking plate on the steering column switches.  Looks similar

Thanks but if you look closely at the pictures in post 1 & 2 you can see the tool is a puller and not a spring compressor.

I stopped by the shop today and checked out the 68 Cadillac steering column and it does not look like any column i have ever worked on  The turn signal switch is not made by Delco and it is too large to remove without removing the steel outer shell. I hope to go back friday and attempt to remove the outer shell using j-hook bolts.

The battery holddown hooks did not work on this steering column because it was a telescoping column.
When you try to use a balancer puller and the bolts the columns center shaft will just push down into the column.
This is why the service manual shows Kent Moore tool J-22598 attached to a slide hammer.
