Schooner-rigged scow the "Kauri" built by Alex Duthie in 1889 photographed in Auckland in August 1904. Railway Terminus Hotel (right, distance), Mechanics Bay (centre), and Parnell (left). Hundreds of these flat bottomed sailing scows traded around the coast from the 1870s to the 1920s. Some had engines installed and lasted into the 1950s. "Kauri" is, ironically, loaded with kauri logs.
