Was the gasoline refined as much back then, like say was it less volitile more like kerosene or diesel?

Gas has always been the same -- but over the years additives made it burn and perform differently. Gas used to be dumped after the refining process because it wasn't considered useful (too volatile) for any large commercial application. What John D. Rockefeller was after in the refining process was mostly kerosene for all the oil lamps in the country. Before that time oil lamps were burning expensive whale oil -- which decimated the whale population. It wasn't until the internal combustion engine made it into a car and machinery that gasoline became a sought after commodity.

There's a guy that rebuilds and services those. I had a box of NOS parts I sold him.
I had a gas heater in a VW beetle , toast you to well done in 20 degree weather.
