I need some help understanding this paint that was used
« on: March 07, 2023, 08:21:57 PM »
I'm working on repainting a vintage Shakespear Royal maroon series fishing reel ( just about the best line of spinning reels ever made ), a model 2052 made between 1966 and 1968.
The body and rotor of the reel are a die cast metal, and the side plate is stamped aluminum.
On that aluminum side plate the surface under the paint I stripped off looks like it was anodized or something.

I threw on the 1st coat of paint on it before I thought to take a picture, but here's my other 2052 that I had decided not to proceed with refinishing a year or two ago.

Here you can see the clear color differences, this side plate previously matched the rotor.
Is there some reason they might anodize the aluminum before painting it , or could it be something the paint did to the surface of the aluminum?
Always lookin' to learn
