Title: 1/2" sets...
Post by: bmwrd0 on September 26, 2018, 05:03:13 PM
I picked this up about six months ago, saw an estate sale sign, thought I would stop in. Went straight to the garage and there were actually good tools there, but I spotted this under a table and knew it was coming home with me. Also picked up a Volvo adjustable by Bahco, the one with the tire lever on the end.

It is not the right breaker bar, it is missing the 3/4 socket and I am not sure which deep sockets it should have (looks to be missing one, with a newer backfill) But if you pull up the tray you get this

Both speeders! And a few DBE's.

So, while I have a few more nice set, what do you have?

Nice set! Box looks to be in nice shape and the set looks almost new in the pix. I like the short speeder.

Well, it was YOUR next child! But really it was one of those "Well, it aint cheap, but I have the cash in my pocket..." situations.

Then again, my old man used to wander around on weekends with a couple grand in his pocket in case there were guns...

Nice set. Did you cut the foam? I like the way you did it if you did.

Sure did! That's an older Bonney box i modded for 1/2" drive use.
I wanted the three 20" extensions to fit in the box, so made a shelf-like tray with handles to hold them just right, with all the rest of the accessories below. Needed 60" to reach to the bottom of air conditioners to break loose the compressor bolts. Most newer condensing units are 4-5 feet deep!

I was wondering about the extensions. Excellent setup. The tray is neat too - well done sir!

Very nice d42. Enviable collection you have.

What is the ratchet shown on the first ad? It looks like a round head on my screen but never seen a Plomb roundie.

Thanks. I think it’s the ratchet that’s in my set that looks round due to the angle of the illustration. That’s pretty much the only one they were making during that time frame.

That ratchet is awesome and I figured it was correct but the illustration was confusing. You have all three which to me a major coup! That trio belongs in SK's triple play thread http://garagegazette.com/index.php?topic=427.0

I have one 1/4  - well two one has a female drive with removable plug and one with the drive lug fixed.

More goodness form d42jeep. man you got some nice sets.

we've seen some of the 1/4s and 1/2ers. I'm betting theirs some 3/8 sets to droll over too.

Not many matched anything in my garage.    But found this a few years back.   All Husky,  know its missing some things,  for some reason the previous owner didn't ever use the ratchet.  He electro penciled it anyhow.  The tools and sockets don't show anywhere near the wear that the box got.

Thanks, guys. Most of my sets have started with estate sale, garage sale or flea market finds. For me the fun is in completing the sets. Here is one I’m working on now. Late one afternoon this summer I spotted a Craigslist garage sale ad mentioning tools so the neighbors and I ran to town to check it it about 4:00. It was the typical bunch of crap but the seller’s toolbox was sitting out and I talked him into showing me his tools. They were all pretty modern but I told him I was into old stuff and he mentioned that he had inherited a Snap-on set from his father recently and offered to show it to me, but he didn’t want to sell it. It turned out to be a fairly complete 1/2” drive late ‘40s New Britain set. He was surprised and disappointed to find out it wasn’t Snap-on so I said I was interested in buying it if he wanted to let it go. He took down my phone number. In the meantime my neighbor found a $2.00 test light and the guy had a chance to think about my offer and with a TINY bit of urging decided to sell me his inheritance. Here are some pictures. The first one is as found and the last ones I took yesterday.

I wasn’t sure whether to post this set in the 1/2” or 3/8” thread but I figured since the ratchet is 1/2” drive that it belonged here. It came with the original cardboard insert and looked virtually unused.

Okay not a half inch drive set, but a set of half inch drive sockets.   Full set of SK polished sockets, almost no wear, only 4 had any dirt in them.  Actually got two sets, 3/8 - 1-1/4,  one never used and one that's been used hard.   Found in a junk store in an old shoe box.  Thought it was amazing that a good quality set of sockets sat unused for decades,  always felt the finish on these SK was better than any others sold at that time.  Haven't looked to see what the period set would look like.

Those look great. Early this summer my neighbor brought me a nice batch of knurled S-K sockets that look very similar to yours. Here they are after cleaning. He knows I dig S-K. Here are some sets those sockets might have come in.

That BE ratchet is a real war horse. I had one and when I got it it was just about solid. Took it apart and cleaned out all the hardened grease a little cleaning and some new grease and it was amazing. I gave it to a friend eventually.

These Duro-Indestro sets are desirable to WW2 toolset collectors because they come with most of the D-I sockets to complete a General Mechanics Tool Set commonly referred to as a GMTK. They were also purchased by the Navy as can be seen from the NAF catalog listing. Here are mine.

It strikes me as odd that the box was silver or gray on the outside and red on the inside. I would have expected silver or gray, both inside and outside. I do think it is an original Cman box though.

So I'm not sure where this should go, as it has a bunch of matching sockets in 1/2 and 3/8 drive. It should have a bunch of other bits in it, like drive tools etc. but they were long gone, except for a Ferret sliding T handle (not pictured) and a 3/8 universal that is very rusty and as loose as a universal can get without being disassembled. It had a bunch of other interesting junk in it, though including a Plomb WF-21 rat in 3/8, a Plomb 5262  12" extension in 3/8, and a bunch of random WF Plomb sockets in 9/32 and 3/8 drive. It also had a large flat head prybar...screwdriver marked Massey Harris USA (I gave to my dad, looked like a Pratt-Read).

A lot of the 1/2 drive sockets look like they had a pipe wrench or channel locks on the O.D., all chewed up. Still pretty cool, though. I've used them a few times in a pinch with no issues, except sockets lack any detent. I bought this a number of years ago for $20 wanting the box only (not knowing then it was basically a tool collector's starter kit  :D :D :D ). But the partial set of sockets, sliding T, and universal are all dated '34 or '35, which I thought was cool.

Box measures approx. 20"×7"×3"

As shown, it is overflow 1/2 drive storage. Most of the sockets in the trays came with, (lots of random USA brand fill ins). Everything else has been added.

They are 13/16”, 7/8”, 15/16” and 1”. Pretty useful sizes and they seemed to fit in with the set as extras. The 13/16” could double up as a spark plug socket.

Gang,

I like Fleet tools, especially their smoooooth ratchets.  The Fleet tools are different than the other Plomb/Proto tools.  Where did Fleet fit into the Plomb/Proto mix?  Was Fleet originally an independent tool company that Plomb/Proto acquired but couldn't really standardize and integrate?

Your thoughts...
