Crazy taxes
« on: October 05, 2020, 11:47:20 AM »
The Tahoe Transportation District is looking to tax drivers that drive through the Lake Tahoe basin. They claim to have a $1.5 billion shortfall in funds. This is California's doing as they have asked our county for permission and they want to ask our state legislature to pass a law to allow it. Our county says no way as many of our residents live there or go to the lake and casinos which is in our county. Almost half of the lake is in NV and more in CA but all the big hotels and casinos are in NV. The residents complain about the tourist traffic that provides most of their jobs.

Failing Calif is looking for money wherever they can and want to tax people that visit or work at the lake in NV. What crazy taxes they trying or doing in your area?

Can't think of anything in particular, but it kills me how they always worry about bringing in more revenue than reducing expenses.

It's amazing that the people of California are behind any of these crazy initiatives that their respective representatives keep piling on.

So is the Tahoe Trans District a dual state entity?  And is it responsible for the roads around both sides of Tahoe or is it just California?  I ask because if its dual state, then the money has to come from somewhere and it makes sense for both states to participate.  The easiest way is to raise the hotel room tax rate and perhaps the sales tax rate around tahoe because they are the folks who would benefit the most from better road system, getting the customers in and out easier.

Not a fan of  raising taxes but if improvements need  to be made, it has to be paid for.

Now if its Cali just trying to make NV pay for it, they can pound sand,

It appears to be a commie MTA with little, if any, responsibility for roads. And they've used 'rona as an excuse to bring forward their free rides for parasites program. That probably explains the $,$$$,$$$,$$$ shortfall.

I just found out 15 minutes ago in talking to my BIL and sister who came by to pickup their dog, that the district has an annual budget of $100,000 and they are not responsible for much of anything. The west side and south end are in CA and the east side and half the north end is NV. Matt pretty much nailed it.

I think whoever would profit from the improvement should pay for it. BUT I am stuck on the 1 1/2 BILLION dollar price tag.

That number looks to be missing a couple zeros. First pic is from P18 of 1st link. Second is P29 of second link and only covers the "Transit" portion of their budget.

Thanks Matt as the BIL has lived in Tahoe for many years and he must of been thinking of something else. It is easy to see why they are in the hole on transit as their fare recovery percentage sucks at 12-15% even if those are old numbers. Operating costs of $6.50 to $7.50 per passenger with a fare of around a buck can never pencil out. Public transportation is a money losing operation no matter where it is.

As a native Californian of 59+ years now (I have never lived anywhere else), I can assure you that "the people of California" are not ALL behind this INSANE bullshit - by a long shot.

There are PLENTY of us conservatives here - unfortunately we are outnumbered by the loons in the urban areas voting-wise.  :banghead:

People are leaving here in droves - and who can blame 'em - but I love my state, (it really is a beautiful place - other than the cities - y'all who have never visited, should ;)) and I and many others are gonna stay here and FIGHT the bastards.

My roots are WAY too deep and I can't afford to leave.

Wish us luck.

Absolutely beautiful state.  I've only been a few times but definitely want to go back.  It's a tragedy that such a nice place has been taken over by socialists/communists.   :03:

I agree Cali is nice. except for the big cities. I went to some computer training there and found it most enjoyable, after we left Oakland behind.
