Next stop was the Clyde Dam. This is the last hydro dam to be built in NZ and produces 440MW from four turbines.

Lake Dunstan, behind the dam. The landscape is definitely rougher.

Cromwell at the top of the lake.

Other end of the scale, Roaring Meg power station in the Kawarau Gorge between Cromwell and Queenstown. Built in 1936 it generates 3MW.

From Queenstown I headed south.

At the bottom of the lake is Kingston, home of the heritage railway, the Kingston Flyer.

Heading further south to Mandeville there is Waimea Plains Railway. They have this restored Rogers locomotive.

More importantly, at Mandeville there is the Croydon Aircraft Company and the Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre. The Heritage Centre has a collection of, mostly flying, vintage aircraft.

de Havllanf 83 Fox Moth. This was the first regiistered passenger aircraft in NZ.

Non-de Havilland

Snark HA1 composite single seater microlight, the prototype of more successful Snark designs.

Bantam microlight, now built by Croydon Aircraft.

Musger Mg 19a Steinadler Gull Wing Glider

Ex RNZAF Aermacchi 339CB

Auster J-1B Aiglet

Replica - 1910 Pither Monoplane. Completed in 2006 and flown at Mandeville. The pilot was microlight veteran Jerry Chisum who declared the design controllable - just!
