« on: October 03, 2021, 05:39:34 PM »
Some RCBS set come with 2 dies some with 3 ?
Why?
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Bottle necked cases need to two, straight wall cases, like pistol cartridges, need 3. Someone who remembers why will be along to give you a useful answer soon, I bet.

Its caliber specific.

1. Deprime and case OD size
2. Radius the case mouth
3. Taper crimp

^ this.

Redding 3 die sets will have a neck size die that only squeezes the neck down, leaving the case body fireformed to fit your chamber. This is a step beyond entry level reloading.

Lee sends 4 dies in their kits. The 4th is a "factory crimp die" that crimps the case mouth into the sides of the projectile to keep it from moving if the loaded ammo get heavily jostled around. There's some debate on crimping rifle ammo. I crimp all my bulk plinking ammo. Anything for an AR should be crimped in my opinion. The factory crimp die for pistol, straight walled case forces the entire round into shape, making for easier chambering. Some feel it can crush the projectile too much, I haven't seen an issue and run all rounds through one.

Get a dedicated decapping die from Lee. Then you can deprime and clean up your brass prior to running it through the size die.

no most dies will fit in most presses their pretty much uniform in thread size on newer stuff unless you get into vintage presses which some had proprietary sizes but those are few and far between .

You didn't mention the press brand. Here is a thread on RCBS compatibility with a Dillon press.

I dont reload myself. I set a young guy up in the craft and he makes boollets for me. I buy the supplies and provides the labor. I dont have the patience for it. But I will recomend you dont buy a vibratory cleaner and get a tumbler. Water, stainless pins and soap will turn out brand new looking brass. I've been cleaning my brass before my reloader gets it and he's amazed at how clean they get.
