Construction equipment display in Twizel.

Euclid B6FTD tractor unit off a motor scraper. It was used to tow prefabricated houses from the production facility to Twizel. It was then used in the penstock factory to push penstock sections between the various build stages.

Euclid R-15 dump truck, 124 were imorted for the project until bigger dum trucks became available.

International 495 motor scraper. The largest motor scraper built by International. Only 85 were built and the Ministry of Works and Development bought 15 for the Benmore earth dam construction.

An explanation on the Upper Waitaki Scheme above the Waitaki River requires a map and several hours. So working downstream, the biggest dam is Benmore.

This is a 100m (300') high earth dam that generates 540MW.

Crossing Benmore.

Next downstream is Aviemore Dam. It is composite structure with to be e north end, sitting on rock, being concrete and the south end being earth. It is 40m (120') high and generates 220 MW.

Both dams were built in the 1960's.

The final dam in the scheme is the Waitaki Dam. It was completed on 1935. It is a concrete dam and produces 205MW. It was the last dam project completed in New Zealand without the help of mechanised equipment.

After checking in at Kurow Holiday Park, I headed down the road to check out where the racing is happening tomorrow.

A little bit of a change in accommodation from lake front to tourist flat.

Even a little ford on the way in to the track.

Today was a travel day, about 500km (300 miles) in total.

What a difference a night makes.

At least it cleared up before I got to Lindis Pass.

NZ made cast aluminum toys. These were first made in the early 1940's. About 100 out of the original 275 plus designs are still being hand sand cast from the original mould plates.
