Checking, cracking, and waning, not enough wood along the edge of a piece of lumber where there was not enough log left to leave a sharp edge to dimension lumber.
Gramps was a framing carpenter through the depression. Dad, a decent carpenter, better than me. BIL been a framer for decades. Between the three even a hack carpenter like me learns a bit about wood, carpentry, and terminology. ;)

Not at all. I have just been lucky enough to be around a lot of folks that know a bit a bout this and that and fortunate enough to have a memory good enough to remember a few of the things folks were kind enough to share with me through the years. Amazing how much a guy can learn if he listens and remembers the things so many others share.
In my case it makes a guy that is not that bright seem like he actually knows a thing or two! ;)
