Checking, cracking, and waning, not enough wood along the edge of a piece of lumber where there was not enough log left to leave a sharp edge to dimension lumber.

Gramps was a framing carpenter through the depression. Dad, a decent carpenter, better than me. BIL been a framer for decades. Between the three even a hack carpenter like me learns a bit about wood, carpentry, and terminology.
