Gallon bucket of Berrymans with the parts basket was what I always used. Use rubber gloves, avoid flames and have plenty of ventilation.

Berrymans was the best. Years back I bought the last gallon of the original formula at the local parts store. Wish I still had some left.

I remember my mentor when I was a teenager, Whitey, who always had a Pall Mall red hanging in his mouth working over a bucket of the stuff. He also had a tub filled with gasoline to wash parts in and the cigarette was ever present there as well.

The gallon I spoke of I still have. I imagine that gallon is likely 20-25 years old so I suspect it might be the old formula you spoke of Steve.

The whole time I grew up, my dad used nothing but gasoline for parts cleaner. Being raised that way, I did too well into my thirties before finally stopping the practice for the most part, though if I was in a pinch I would still use gas, but probably more cautiously with greater concern for things like static spark from vigorously using a brush and things like that than when I was younger, more dumb, and less cautious.

At least there were no cigarettes or open flames around when dad used gas.

A good 40 years ago, while working in a Shell station, we had a 5 gal pail of Berrymans Chem dip. A fellow mechanic dropped a part to the bottom while dipping a carb, and then went after it with a bare hand and arm. I remember the continual (loud) wailing complaints about it burning after running to the washroom sink, and he lost the hair from his arm. Strange, what we remember, including the smell of that stuff that was like no other solvent. My 1 gallon lasted forever until it rotted the can.

I stuck my hands in it many times. It sort of shriveled up the skin like when your hands are water a long time but it did burn a little. For some reason I thought it was desiccating the skin and stopped. Not because I thought it was harmful but that the water would contaminate the cleaner.

Fortunately,  I never stuck any body parts in that stuff. I knew it was some nasty crap!

I'm sure he was a fountain of knowledge. I also was fortunate enough to meet a few Whitey's in my formative years. Sadly many of them lived short lives. The rigors and hazards of WWII (and/or Korea) and constant exposure to harsh shop environments throughout their lives took it's toll on their health.

He was one of the smartest guys I have ever met. He had a lot of sayings which influenced the way I think to this day.
