MACHINE SHOP / Cold bluing
« Last post by Uncle Buck on May 17, 2024, 11:51:02 PM »
While not as durable as hot bluing, after trying it on a couple of cheaply aquired, but old USA made 4" machinist parallels,  I am sold! I took great care prepping the clamps prior to bluing them and was rewarded with clamps that are beautiful and now look like new!

Count me a convert. I plan to do a lot more of that in the future.

I always thought of the Starrett Last Word, as one of the very best. The last few years it seems to have fallen out of favor if the comments I read on machinist forums are a good yardstick. That said, I have my doubts about what I read. Most of those commenting seem to hold Starrett mics, or most of the rest of the Starrett product line in low regard. Seems most folks anymore favor Mitutoyo for everything.

In my recent months of binge buying a number of mics and many other machinist goodies, I still hold both Starrett and Mitutoyo in high regard, but have come to hold a number of others in high regard as well, but seem to find most bang for the buck buying used in B&S, Lufkin,  Scherr Tumico,  Moore and Wright and a few others, but primarily the first three brands named. Usually,  Pratt and Whitney mics, especially those like new and still in boxes go insanely high (funny since they are just re-labeled Lufkin) I lucked into a couple of the Pratt and Whitney like new and still in their original cardboard boxes with very little wear and appearing to have never been used even lightly just dirt cheap that are amongst my very favorites.

I really have to get picture posting down because I believe a few of the things I have bought a quite rare and rarely seen.i cannot say I needed some of the stuff I have bought, but have no regrets because I am very selective with most purchases and only rarely have bought any tool showing great wear. I b
prefer very clean, showing little wear, in original boxes which rules a lot of stuff out.

I was hoping you would comment on this because so little information is available about it. Glad to hear your confirmation that it is decent quality.  I am sure it is mid level quality wise, but for the price I could not gripe.

Today, I found on ebay a depth extension attachment like new, in box, with original instructions for $20 shipped,  so I bought that too. So now I have $40 in the expanded capacity set.

Not B&S, or Federal,  but USA made, like new, so I am OK with my purchase despite it not being a top tier brand.

Those Fox bodies have certainly reached the re cool zone.

I owned this one for a few months, it was definitely fun and got lots of thumbs up!  5.0 with a 5 speed.

MACHINE SHOP / Re: Use micrometers often?

Tools from the following countries I don't trust to be high quality and accurate. (I could be wrong, but don't know) Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and of course China.

You nailed that. I have a Fowler set of micrometer from 0"-6" that I purchased about 40 years ago. Fowler was once a great precision tool maker made in the USA. Today they source worldwide, mostly China. And have unreliable quality. This set was clearly made in Japan, and are the finest quality.

I salvage this set from the fire. And purchased a NOS Starrett wood case to store them. With a ton of work I was able to return these to service. Just a quick note. Any tool that was stored in a wooden box and most everything in my Gerstner wood chest was saved... Item in steel cabinets and tool boxes had to be trashed..

These 0" to 12" Mitutoyo micrometer I purchase 50 years ago and all are clearly made in Japan.. GOOD Stuff

I purchased this one inch Lufkiin micrometer when I was fourteen years old. One of the first precision tools in my collection. I still have the original box it came in..

A set of 1" to 3" Mitutoyo, 1/2" Starrett, and several other older mics...

Nice job on bringing it over the line for the win. Its always a great feeling once the pain is over.  ;)

Thanks OnS, I got it done today and used a Rock Auto sourced OEM quality CAT. That said, even a good OEM quality part never fits exactly like the original, but Toyota CAT's for this model and year are supremely expensive and on backorder. A few very slight modes here and there and I saved a bundle going with Walker on this repair.
