Title: Service the Freedom 42
Post by: Elroy on May 07, 2022, 09:59:24 PM
With the new growing and mowing season upon us, Elroy took the opportunity this week end to service the lawn tractor. First order of business was replacing the old worn out seat. OEM parts are just a little on the $teep side so this generic will work.

Pull the deck off and strip off the old worn out belts

Scrape off the deck and install some sharp blades. Check blade timing to avoid interference

Ready for the season. We'll keep an eye on the clutch anchor pin. It's getting a little thin

Good going Elroy! Maintenance is everything on this light duty equipment. I just performed a similar service on my own 15 y/o Craftsman lawn tractor (MTD) last week. Cleaned, oiled, timed, and fixed some rust spots. Good to go!

Good luck with the old girl for the season.

It may be just the picture but Elroy may want to look at that belt?

Excellent observation. Elroy saw that belt the other day..........along with one of the flat face idler pullies not shown, while the deck was off for service. One can't see it when it's all together.
Those parts are due in later this week.

closer inspection revealed the transmission fan was shot as well. Access wasn't the easiest until some other parts were removed.

I'll say that fan was garbage! Good catch! That'll keep the hydro cool.

I finished my mower "maintenance" about 3 weeks ago, but I wont bother all with the pics. Its a Scotts (JD made) that just refuses to quit despite me being less than kind to it from time to time. On top of that I bought it used!!

My recent experience with fixing a hydrostatic tranny leak on this was quite rewarding. Made by Tuff Torque, it looks scary from the outside but take your time, and you will be quite surprised at its simplicity if you rip it open.

I needed to replace the input shaft (fan shaft) after it becoming a bit worn on the splines. Easy, cheap, no need to split the tranny. I needed to split the tranny after fooling around with the "pull it out of gear" lever that allows you to roll the tractor. Good thing I did, because tugging on that lever (and shaft) dislodged a small circlip that I needed to discover in the oil. There are lots of videos on YT that document the fluid change (many dont have drain plugs, like mine), and general maintenance like the internal filter, cleaning the oil magnet etc.

Don't be skeeered with pulling it apart. Take your time. Have your parts in advance. Know the oil you will be refilling it with, and you'll be golden.

Nice machine there Elroy
