I couldn't find any affordable EVA online and wasn't sure where I'd get some,  then I remembered the cheap foam floor mat set they sell at HF so I grabbed a pack when I was in town today.

I'm quite happy with how it came out, it looks good and holds the sockets well.

That Craftsman box is actually earlier,  1 of these was in the set of Craftsman tools gifted to my father in 1947.  His brothers chipped in to see that he had decent tools to restart farming, after leaving Chicago.   I started using his 1/4 set in the 60s.

Thanks for the info.

Now that you mention it, the boxes I'm thinking of are a lighter color and have the red plastic insert.
I'm thinking of the boxes for the flying V ratchets.

I just checked the WRIGHT 2400 off my list.
I don't blame them because I think the contour grip is the clear winner, but it's a shame that they discontinued it.

I'm assuming a more recent example would probably be nicer, but the 2400 I just got is still pretty nice.
The mechanism is stiffer than my contour grips which I assume is just the mechanism having been improved over time, but the F&F and the chrome quality is not as nice either.

It's funny that usually things were made better, but they finish and action on the current stuff is much nicer.
Probably on par where it matters most, but I don't blame WRIGHT for dropping the 2400.

I do consider the 2426 to be the king of 1/4" ratchets anyways.

Stupid question as I haven't read through this thread (sorry).....

What grease do you recommend when rebuilding/regreasing these?

I use superlube.
I'm not sure I've specifically said so in this thread, but the tube of it might have found it's way into some of the pictures.

The seller listed this a vintage which I knew wasn't true, but I didn't really expect it to be brand new.

It's a nice ratchet, but not where servicing it is concerned.

That ring is a bitch , and this is the first ratchet that's ever drawn blood.
No that cut on my middle finger isn't serious, but it's bleeding even if just barely.

Weren't the vintage ones like 30 teeth?

Those were the "good" ratchets I got to use, on occasion at grandma's.  (her tools and the tools I bought for working on her house/stuff, stayed there)

I don't know,I thought the 40970 was supposed to be about 36 teeth or so, but this one is 60.

My WRIGHT ratchets are 42 tooth.
It's a shame they don't seem to have ever offered their dual pawl mechanism in 1/4" , but then again I suppose if they did it would probably be in the larger headed " high torque " model.

A 2426 with a dual pawl mechanism could be about the best 1/4" ratchet ever made.

I kind of wish Wright had a 1/4 ONLY, open head ratchet.  I have had this weird notion to put that generation designed tools, with the VW.

You can always get a Thorsen 77m on Ebay,  they're not hard to come by at all.
