1995 GMC 3500hd front brake not working????
« on: September 03, 2018, 02:09:59 PM »
I have a bucket truck, rotors were rusty, flaky, I changed left side rotor and pads, changed pads on right as it looked ok. Pulls to the left.  Changed right side rotor took it for a ride, rode the brakes pretty hard, still pulls to left. Checked temps of rotors, Left side, 240, right side 83(outsite temp). I noticed when I went to compress right side piston my c clamp wouldn't budge it, I open bleeder and in it went no problem. Do I have a collapsed hose????

Sure sound like it  -- old hoses can look perfectly fine, but can be seriously constricted on the inside. I'd also take the caliper off and pop the piston to inspect the bore or piston surface for corrosion

Right side is not moving at all.  Seized piston, collapsed hose or pinched steel line.  If not a leak before the caliper.

Good luck.

Think I'll just replace caliper and hose, not very expensive via Rock Auto

Calipers probably froze up. pop the bleeder open and squeeze it closed with a clamp.

Cheap enough to swap caliper and hoses.

Didn't pull before I started all this, I wonder if when I compressed piston the first time something happened? Of course the rotors were so rusty, not sure I had much braking power. Local NAPA price are close to Rock Auto and no dealing with return shipping. I'm sure the NAPA will have to get from hub but should have parts in a day.

I like NAPA. They weren't here for a long time since the last one closed 15 years ago, but some experienced parts guys got together and opened up a new store.

Can’t go wrong with NAPA. Cost a little more, but well worth it.

My local napa just changed hands.  Hoping they don't mess with my discount.  We buy all we can from them but we are not high volume.  Got a great discount over the years because my wife ALWAYS pays the bills on time or early.  The previous owner rewarded us for that.  New owner has 6 or more stores so I am now just a number ???

Got the brakes working, changed both caliper and hose. Checked temp of rotor after test drive, both rotors within a few degrees. Didn't pull so I knew it was working anyway but I was curious if they would be close. Now I need inspection which is a pain in the ass

Noticed some liquid on floor once I moved truck out of shop, diesel fuel,  if it ain't one thing its another. I'm assuming its the return line but its coming from rear of engine. Thats where filter is and all the lines come together there.  I doubt its filter housing, its brand new. All the lines except hard lines have been replaced. Loose clamp or maybe rust on the hard return line? Try to find it tomorrow
