If you listen to the fake news MSM broadcasts, you'd think the end of the world is near. Things are bad, no doubt about that, but we've been here before, and it was worse. Many of you are too young to remember, but the worst year in my lifetime (from a social/political perspective) was 1968.

We had it all -- out of control riots, billions in property destruction, and death all across America after MLK was assassinated. We had a major war on our hands, and for the first time we were losing ground because of the Communist Tet Offensive in Vietnam. We had a Hong Kong Flue pandemic (that also originated in China) and killed 10s of thousands. Mid-year Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, while college campuses were burning across the country in protests against the Federal government and the War in Vietnam. To top it off, the streets in Chicago ran red with blood when during the Democratic National Convention hundreds of young protesters were beaten to a pulp by the local Chicago PD and the National Guard. It was mayhem, and in retrospect, 1968 was a defining year for our country. We still live with the repercussions of that terrible year.

1968 reduced the Democratic Party to shreds, and paved the way for Richard Nixon to lead this country. Most people didn't like Nixon, but he promised to restore order and get us out of Vietnam -- that was enough to get him elected. The legacy and ideals of JFK had been lost and the country was floundering, yet within just a few years we as a country prevailed (despite Nixon and Watergate).

Yes, things are bad today, but they were worse in 1968 -- much worse. The legacy of 1968 is a defining moment in our history, and even though we have problems right now, it's a far cry from the chaos that we experienced 52 years ago.

Yeah, the local loonies were out the past weekend in Tucson. Not as crazy as some of the big cities but they still broke windows and lit dumpsters ablaze. And our libtard mayor finally came out of covid hiding to stand on a podium with the chief of police to basically say, "protesters should be nice".  :ecomcity:

I find it hilarious that last week if we went out in public with out a mask we would catch the rona and die.
This past weekend the rioters are elbow to elbow sweating, screaming, and bleeding on each other. If the rona rate dose not sky rocket in MN by this Friday I guess we will know how big of a scam quarantine was.

The difference between 68 and now, folks now are spoiled rotten and have no idea what hardship is. Shit, folks are freaking out about not being able to get there hair done, or nails done or wearing a freakin' mask.  This could get bad and we have a president who runs for shelter instead of going on TV asking for calm.

One thing is certain -- the blue Democratic cities will experience a middle class white/black flight out of the cities in response to these riots. It happened in '64, '68, '92, and it will happen this time.

Detroit and DC for example were never the same after 1968. Middle class whites and blacks turned their backs on the cities and  moved to the security of suburban neighborhoods. It was a huge loss to those cities; especially Detroit. History repeats itself -- and those Democratic cities will suffer.

Don't forget Baltimore.  When Freddie Grey died in police custody, about 5 years ago or so, mayhem broke out in Baltimore with riots, burning looting etc.  The city has never recovered.  Tourism never came back, I don't think convention business came back and worse yet, the killings have gotten worse.  There were 15 people shot over the weekend, 5 died.  We are on pace to exceed the 340 who were killed last year. Population is about 600,000.  Oh, little Italy, with all its fine restaurants, hadn't recovered completely.

Folks just don't feel safe going to the city, especially at night.  I was at a place in the hood last friday picking up some cabinets I won on an internet auction.  When I parked, I saw 3 black men sitting on the stoop.  Looked like they had a neighborhood carwash.  Very common in Baltimore.  Well, didn't take me long to figure out they were selling dope, pretty much in the open.  when the police cruised by, they didn't seem bothered at all.  They didn't bother me or anyone else for that matter that I saw but it was a little unsettling after I thought about it for a while.  They certainly could have robbed me easily.

I understand the frustration of the black community because a lot of black folks who have done nothing wrong, get hassled by the police.  I also see the police POV, there are alot of bad actors in the black community in the city who make the situation bad for everyone.

What I don't understand is the lack of complaining and protesting of the number of non police killings and shootings that has been going on for decades in this city (and likely many others).  That is a far worse problem IMO.

The skin colors don't fit the narrative for spicy news, as sad as that is it's fact.

That statement is as pathetic as the lamestream media trying to say Trump is a coward and ran to the bunker. FYI it was the Secret Service who took him to the bunker as that is their job whether he wanted to go or not.

When they started protesting in Reno on Saturday the mayor tweeted that she will not tolerate the use of excessive force by the police. After she neutered the police and the agitators started their crap they descended on the police station and damaged patrol cars. Then they moved to city hall and busted windows and lit a fire inside and not a single cop was in sight at the time. They showed up a little later and people were complaining about the tear gas bothering them.

I think the police officers need to have a vote of no confidence in the mayor and she needs to go. I think she should of been gone several years ago when she ordered the gay flag flown on Pride Day and the US flag was taken down and replaced with the rainbow POS flag.

assholes rioted in fargo nd  saturday night!

busted up one of my favorite hangouts, j.l. beers, a little hole in the wall burger and beer joint. sprayed grafitti all over and snashed a pile of windows, damaged a few police cars.

i don't understand why the leaders.....who have very right to be upset by the floyd killing, don't condemn the carnage that destroys  the very business that many of these people depend on.
from the ashes shall rise a phoenix

i was here when the hangout turned into mexican food site!

Thank you for the history lesson Ray. I was aware of the Bobby Kennedy and MLK deaths. However I didn't know there were mass riots afterwards.

What happened in 92 as I was just a youngin then?

I just don't understand the idea of looting/rioting.

Peaceful protesting sure. I mean it usually gets nothing done, but it's not destructive or hurtful.

So here in Buffalo , a local pharmacy was trashed and looted. It's the only one in that whole area and they trashed it. They have video tape of the event. I hope they go after them.

...What happened in 92 as I was just a youngin then?...

Rodney King riots.

I got back to the yard that day they started rioting and the boss said I needed to run a couple of units of plywood over to a city where rioting was happening so the city could board up their windows. Then he told me I couldn't take my fast truck and had to take the oldest slowest tilt cab in the fleet. I laughed at him and clocked out and went home. They ended up getting a black driver to take it but not in the old worthless slow truck.

The next day we hauled plenty of loads of plywood to city and county yards. I went to one county yard and they took the plywood off my truck and put it on county trucks which roared out of there with two sheriff cars each as escorts. That was also when the L.A. County Sheriff still kicked ass and didn't take crap off of anybody as they really knew how to use their batons.
