Juneteenth
« on: June 19, 2020, 08:03:36 AM »
Well, since this is the new favorite holiday of the left, I'm curious to know when others first heard of it.  I'm fifty and never heard of it until the last year or two.

News to me as well. Our governor just declared it a state holiday. Pretty soon every special interest will have their own "state holiday", and we won't have time to go to work anymore.

I never heard of it until last week when Trump announced his rally was going to be on that day and all the BLM crowd went ballistic.

It's gonna take an act of Congress.  Depends who's in power.

Had not heard of it either but did learn it had been a regional holiday in Texas for a long time.

Kind of like Patriots day in Massachusetts

Friday at lunch I was visiting with a guy who's family used to run one of the bigger feed mills in our area. starting in the late 40s or early 50s they would have a big party for their crew on Juneteenth. They had 40-50 black guys working there and they would have a big barbeque, butcher 4-5 hogs several dozen chickens and everyones family would show up. He said they would have several 100 folks. big time was had by all, whites and blacks.  Somewhere in the early 60s the local preachers from the black churches asked them to stop the party because it was taking people away from their Juneteenth celebrations.

Today they're lucky to get several dozen to show up for a Juneteenth march.

Been known in Texas for a long time since it actually is based on the news getting to folks here.

When I was college in Beaumont , Texas,  it was celebrated by blacks, but that was 64 and 65 , so there was still a lot of racial tension around.
I even participated in a peaceful "sit-in" at a local diner that wouldn't serve Blacks. We did succeed in getting them served.

I think it's cool that it's a holiday in Texas.  But ridiculous to try and make it a national holiday, especially when most people outside of Texas have barely heard of it.  National racial grievance warlords want to use it to further their power and keep up this narrative that blacks are barely out of slavery's chains.
