Many of the tool restorations on utube are great!
« on: February 09, 2020, 10:04:20 PM »
I've been watching alot of videos - and learned alot, too - from these guys who do tool restorations on Youtube.
Like this push mower resto.  :c029:

I'm pretty good with tool boxes and ratchets, but many of these guys have me beat hands down.

I`m hooked on the guys rescuing old machines abandoned in the bush.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Oh yeah, like those abandoned loaders and trench diggers.  Awesome!

I seem to have daily nightmares of restoring machines beat past death.  Six days a week.

Saw this one recently and loved it.
This guy really seems to know his stuff, and he even reverse lapped this reel mower to sharpen it as is the " proper " way to do it.
This guy does great work, but there's lots of stuff on YouTube that makes me cringe.

He seems like a great guy and all, but I just can't get behind what he does.
I'm just one of those people who hates to see people shining up old tools because they think tools are pretty much worthless unless they're shiny and new looking.

I get people can do what they want with their own stuff and all that, I just feel if you want a shiny new looking tool buy a tool that is shiny and new.

No, thanks though.  I would happily do light fab work and bike stuff but someone else would have to do video and editing.   Not enough hours in a day to dedicate more to another hobby.

I stopped doing build threads for look what I did threads.  Nobody ever takes a shot at doing a copycat project anyway.

I like the processes that the guys sometimes reveal in the middle of the resto.

One guy restored this old 1920's battery charger, and wanted to re-plate the one part in nickel. And he made his own nickel plating solution! Now, that's the kind of stuff that I dig! :)
