Got it cheap because of wrinkles. Going to give it a go. Wish me luck
-
Are you thinking of pulling or replacing the innerstructure?
Hope you post pix along the way.
-
That should be a neat project especially if you know Volvos.
I agree, keep us posted
-
Nice project! -- a great vehicle to keep on the road for sure.
-
That should have been a 442.
-
I have a doza if you need to borrow it.
-
Many a year ago, I had the same circa Volvo in a 244 GL configuration. Diesel she was, resplendent in the same color with the Audi mill. Smoked to high heaven, I bought it for pennies with the hopes of refurbing it, for my (at the time), 60 mile round trip commute to the city. The wifes car at the time was the 245 GLT. I kept the 244 for a few years (perhaps more), and flipped it. The interior was MINT, body straight. One of many that has passed through my back 40 gates.

Of course this old hippie had a Volvo as well...1980 244 with a single SU carb. Driving it was like rowing a boat.
Looking forward to seeing progress pix from your project!

Thanks for all the reply's!
1st it was cheap $450.00! I have been out of work since last February. So it will stay cheap. ::)
I originally thought about another V8 swap, more power than the Mrs. V8 Volvo but driving it home made me appreciate it as is. Stock well maintained fun to drive, could use a 5th gear but around town it scoots or at least gets out of its own way. It has aftermarket (IPD) sway bars front and rear.
I have a local metal shaping group possibly coming over to have a meet at my shop (Jabber call me if interested!)
to help work over the 1/4.
Just spent a couple hours at PnP this afternoon to get a brake booster for it and had a nice young fellow, after seeing me struggle, help remove the last bolt. Also snagged an antenna, now "AM radio will reign supreme once again"
(anyone get the reference?)

Wow that was a great deal. Looks like you have this one well covered.
I believe the quote was a song but I can't put my finger on it.

Maybe both? We will see how things go with the metal meet. I did pick up a replacement 1/4, just in case.

The quote was messed up a bit, its from a movie.

Turbo..... thats all im going to say.
-
Video of todays pull, hoping for another go tomorrow.
-
Got it pretty good, however yet to start the hammer and dolly phase. Also got a stud welder kit. Motorguard
brand. US built, been wanting one.
Might be another week or so before I have another update. Boring video I did for my daughter in Georgia.

Slow progress, real slow. getting straight.
-
Good work -- go slow and it'll come out straight. Love the old 242 classic

It's been slow alright. :)
Tomorrow is color day!
Sprayed more primer today after spilling what was left on the floor. Hopefully tomorrow will have some closure on this fiasco.

I'm happy! The job turned out great. The paint is close enough? Just a driver.
-
Very good -- feels great to DIY a job like that.
-
(we need an emoj-thingi that represents great praise)
From this distance that looks great! I saw a blog a long time ago of a guy putting a whole newish back piece on one of these, everything from between the window and trunk lid back and it was a cool read. Good job.
-
Lookin good Brad... nice job.
-
looks pretty good from here. ;D
I don't have the patience for body and paint work.

Thanks!
I am very lucky to have buddies that helped me.
Larry (who is FordCrager (?) on some other garage site.) Runs a metal working website called " Pete's Metal shaping" did most of the straightening.
I did the finish bodywork and primer. I hired a friend of a friend who went above and beyond for the final block sanding and spraying color. Henry is also a really nice guy.
I will insure it today and give it some test drives as this weekend is a big Volvo meet at IPD in Portland.
Not like the car is great, it's not. Just a survivor/10 footer depending on which corner you look at. ;)

Thanks, having removed a quarter and removing most of the spot welds I can appreciate the work involved in something like that.

Thanks Steve! Any pics of the can?

Funny! Watching a car show last night where someone was block sanding and my wife says" who has time for that?"
I told her it can be like meditation, cathartic I think is the right word?
That being said it took months to get from roughed in to ready for primer. I move pretty slow these days.
-
One nice thing is that it all happened in my shop.
Henry is a pro painter but doesn't have a home shop.
Or garage for that matter.
On the other hand I am still cleaning!
-
Na not yet I`ve only sanded it a bit. I should get my finger out though.
-
Made it to Portland. Made it back but not with out issues. The exhaust blew up on the way home.
Over 100 miles with open exhaust! Not cool!
Thing has no O/D so 70 MPH it's winding pretty high.
Had to stop and get a beer. Overall a good time.
Took it apart and have it ready to weld up.
Always something.....
-
So the maiden voyage was not boring... That's a good sign.
-
The Volvo has a new owner. Young kid made me a good offer and that was that. My dreams of it being a DD just didn't agree with my arthritis. Wouldn't you know my left ankle is the worst. Stick with auto for now. Just figured I would update. If I can figure out how to resize on my phone I'll add a pic or two.
-
Sorry to hear it's gone, but at least you gave it new life.
