Drill bits worth having.
« on: July 02, 2020, 02:51:23 PM »
Where can I find decent drill bits? No, forget that. I want GOOD drill bits. I’m prepared to pay for quality because I’m tired of paying for junk.

My uncle just showed me a new Noresman 29pc bit set recently got and damn those were some beautiful drill bits.
They were US made so I'm sure they weren't cheap but they looked excellent,  and he said they cut better than anything he had ever used.
Being a professional plumber I don't really know how much he uses drill bits, but they sure looked nice to me.
Always lookin' to learn

I checked Amazon. The 29 pc set is $75-$80. I don’t think I need drill bits in 1/64 increments though. I’m sure 1/16 increments will do just fine.

While the Norseman 15 pc set is $50, I think the extra drill bits I’d get in the 29 pc are worth the additional $25.

If you do a lot of tapping and threading, you will want that 1/64th bit set. And probably a numbered set also.

I don’t, yet. But I’d like to have the option to. Thanks.

Price wise, those are on par with the Norseman bits.

I've just been buying the sizes i need off ebay when i need them. I try to get usa made stuff but  some of it has been the off shore and chinesium. I watched some vids on the youtube and bought an angle thing to grind the correct angle on the business end and that seems to work ok.

Nothing seems to happen in a hurry over here these days so I just put the order in and move on to the things I can get done until the bits arrive.

31/64 is needed for 9/16-12 and 33/64 is needed for 9/16-18. No set is complete without them.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

So he needs the 30 piece set :lol_hitting:

For tapping it's best to buy the individual sizes you need rather than a fractional set. The correct tap drill will be a number or a letter more often than not. I've got sets of jobbers but I mostly run screw machine length drills.

Nachi drills are the best on the planet. Precision Twist cobalt are honorable mention for price/availability vs toughness.

I have a pet Nachi 'F' screw machine drill that I used daily in the shop that is closing in on 100k holes drilled.
