Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Definitely a rare machine these days. Allen or Sun were the big dogs, but SO and Marquette are rare as hen’s teeth these days.

A great find Jabber, but probably not worth bringing it home.

Garage dust collector, these days.

Still a few uses for them. The dirt track world runs crate motors in a lot of classes. Basically a sealed factory motor. 300hp or 350hp depending on the class. one of the mods thats allowable is distributor advance curve. Not real easy to play with unless you got one of these machines.

Did a third party make the Snap-ons or did they make them themselves

I've wondered about that myself Tim, and I'm not sure. I do know that back in the day certain model year SO testers loosely resembled other manufacturers product designs. Which could mean that they were sourced from Allen or Marquette (or others) with just cosmetic changes to differentiate SO from the parent company product lines. I don't think SO was in the diagnostic electronics business to any certain extent. Even then it was much cheaper to outsource to the specialists -- just as Sears & Roebuck did with all their tools.
