« on: July 14, 2019, 05:56:41 PM »
I don't know , I bought it to test you guys
Why does it have the clamping bolt?
Why is the base the shape it is?

I'm going to say a machinist jack.

The clamping bolt is part of the function to lock it into adjustment and the base to bolt it in place.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

I have one too. I always assumed it was a machinist jack screw. The pad on mine has clearly been milled a bit.

Does it say no. 2 on the front? I might be interested if you would want to sell.

Yes number 2 , look at first photo , looks like 2 to me.
I did some searches , it's an earlier version, the later ones are marked 6 tons capacity.
Why is the base shaped like it is , to fit a certain bed?
I'm not a machinist as you can tell.

I have to agree that it is a machinist jack. The base is shaped that to allow easier clamping to the table using the t-slots. Very useful on odd shaped parts that need to be supported to be steady enough to machine.

Ditto to above. I call them planer jacks personally, but there aren't many planers left in shops anymore. They're handy as a shirt pocket for things like pieces that stick way out the side of the mill vise to keep from being pushed down while you drill holes out there. Also on the weld table for jacking odd shaped things into plane. And a million other uses.

Thanks Roy!
I've been looking for a companion for my lone #2 for a while, I just never see them.

Now I have a pair, AND my OCD is satisfied because the lettering matches.

Ok I don't wanna beat a horse to death, but check this out. I'm guessing this jack wasn't used much since there is an Armstrong logo stamped on the face of the pad!

The one I've had for years has about 1/8" milled off the top, so I had no idea.
