Found a toolroom lathe
« on: August 24, 2019, 10:54:11 AM »
Still working on it , I`m pretty sure it`s a Rivitt 1020s Or it could be a 1020f I`m not sure
http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=2379.
It looks to be in good shape I cannot feel any ridge on the ways . It`s filthy from sitting in a old warehouse.
The guy that has it I`ve know and liked for years , he says it works .
It comes with loads of tooling which is good, granted I`ve got a ton of clean up/ restoring work to do on it.
Fantastic quality lathe in 1950 they were priced at $50,000 so only the gov bought them.
If we can work out a reasonable price and it passes a closer inspection I`ll be bringing it home on the proviso that nothing major is wrong with it.
The plan would be to get it home in the shop where I can see it in the light and clean it up and lube the mechanisms and check all the electronics and drive belts.
Then I`d bring the owner over and have him turn it on so we can both check it out.
If it`s all good it`s mine if not I`ll take it back.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

The rust is a fuking crime but it looks to be complete and not too trashed. The saddle will need to be lifted off and the rust removed before you run the carriage back and fourth to keep that crap from getting embedded in the female saddle ways. Check for slop in the bushings on the vari sheaves (same as your DOALL). Check the tailstock quill taper for gouges from tooling spinning inside. Look for shims between the bottom half of the tailstock where it slides to offset for taper turning. They would be there to make up for wear and get the centers back in line for height. Look for cracks in the compound rest and/or big scars if it's been crashed into the running chuck jaws. Godspeed.

It's a beauty of a lathe. Probably just as good, if not better, than a Monarch 10EE series, but much harder to maintain and find parts for.

Most say they`re better quality than the 10EE . The Rivitt has the advantage of a reeves drive instead of tubes and a lot of old electronic stuff for the variable speed on the Monarch.

I hope it works out jabber and you get that lathe brought back to life. It is a shame to see a beautiful machine in that condition.

I`m still working / haggling on it.
Had another long look at it today , looks like it used to be a USAF machine . The build date on it is 1959.

I see a lathe in your future grasshopper. Not attempted do dads myself. But I can tell you this, they are a great machine for matching, unmatched parts.

Happy hunting

Struck a deal today and he agrees with my returning it if anything's wrong . I`ll be picking up all the loose parts tomorrow.
