TODAYS CL VISE 4-24-19
« on: April 24, 2019, 08:23:35 PM »
I picked this nice Reed no. 104 up today on CL. I had to drive a bit to get it , but it is really nice. The only thin I'm not sure about is the smooth jaws. The vise closes perfectly aligned, I can't feel anything on the jaw face. Did it come that way ?

I don't like painted old vises, does not look like you got hurt, appears they had smooth jaws... odd, 1916 might be the reason

I don't know if you noticed , but my vise has 4 mounting holes and the one in the link has 3 mounting holes.

I have seen other older Reeds with both smooth and knurled jaws. Either these vises all saw heavy use and started as knurled, or it may have been a factory option. I think Parker offered optional smooth jaws as well.

Good grab! You can't go wrong with a Reed unless it has been horribly neglected. I would say it's late production of the non-R vises with 4 hole base.
