Tool Box Stickers
« on: January 26, 2019, 10:18:50 PM »
Just saw a thread on the other site in the tool box thread a guy gets a nice Matco box, cleans it up and covers it in stickers - or as he put it fired the sticker cannon. I honestly don't understand. Not knocking it or criticizing but I really am sort of lost.

But as background I don't wear advertising on my person. My hat is just plain black with no logos or names - and T-shirts if I wear them out of the house are plain with no advertising. Again, I'm not judging or saying it's wrong it's just not something I do.

So I guess carrying that mindset over to the tool box I just don't understand why someone would want that.

I would really be interested to hear a different opinion and see if I'm missing something.

I have stickers on some of my boxes.  Usually it's one I bought with stickers.  I may take some off and add some of my own, or just leave what was on there.  But most of mine are stickerless.

I had a road box with the front closing lid that had all kinds of stickers on it. Bought it off of an older gent at the time. Come to find out years later that the box was actually a true racing road box and the old gent was a crew mechanic for some high end Trans Am racers at the time. Some of the stickers gave the clues, but I was too naive and uninformed to understand what I was looking at.

Lesson learned -- sometimes the stickers tell a story.

In your case I think you have so many boxes you need the stickers to tell them apart.

That makes sense in racing circles (pun partly intended) since sponsors are such a big part.

Like JAFE, I don't wear advertising on my shirts or jackets.  Don't put stickers on my car bumper.  I put stuff on my tool box, but with magnets.  A guy at work had some interesting stickers on his big toolbox.  My favorite one was,  (The proof that God loves us is,  he let us invent beer!)

I don't know why, but putting stickers on a toolbox just seemed like the thing to do for me.
I have stickers on my house box and will probably add others, companies I like have sent stickers with their products so I put them on my box.
My grandfather's box however I left as it was with the single sticker he had on it, I won't be adding any more unless I could find one of the 4th AD patch or one that says " name enough ".

Maybe the whole idea is academic anyway. Probably won't be long before they come covered in warning stickers.

Same here ..........

T-shirts plan solid colors, amazing how easy it is to be different. Hat now and then if the mood stricks me..... got hair.

I do have a few stickers left on the tool box, started removing them a year or so back. NO it did not take that long because of the amount.

Do want a few reminders of personal history. Most walking billboards as I see em are  posers.

Warning stickers, last about as long as the box the item came in.

i have applied very few stickers over the years and i am sure not caught up in brand names. i do however enjoy wearing t shirts from places i have been. i will gladly and proudly wear a t shirt from some hole in the wall bar or cafe  i have had the pleasure of enjoying. i have a few items of clothing i have purchased or have been given that have the logo of seed, fertilizer  or equipment i actually use a (i avoid those i don't use). i also have a few decals on my trucks and t shirts with my initials, name  and farm that i have given out (even elroy has one).

does all of this mean i am poser? elroy told me he likes the t shirt. maybe he is a poser.

the guy who has  logos displayed from head to toe and decals covering his tool box, truck and bathroom wall? he may be a poser. :D

A T with your info is very cool but that's a lot different. I have some T's with band names but they were given to me by J.A.F.E.tte from concerts she went to. I wear them around the house but almost never leave the house in them.

The clothing thing where someone is wearing all Harley Davidson branded stuff strikes me as posing though.

Since there's no warning sticker telling me not stand on the drawers of my roller I need to use it as a ladder change the bulbs over it. Be back soon...

Never put a sticker on a tool box. I don't wear logo shirts except for our EAA chapter shirts but do have embroidered and silk screened shirts with WWII airplanes on them. I will wear hats that the wife brings home from work. I don't care who the vendor is as long as it is a camo hat. The company did start to buy embroidered hats and I wear one of those every single day when I am about and out. People ask me what are Babbitt bearings. I also wear our EAA chapter hat for airport events.

I can't even see my tool box because of all the junk in the shop ! Yes, there are stickers on it from back in the days I had a motorcycle shop. Mostly MC stuff.

I have always tried not to put stickers on my truck, except for a Papawswrench sticker. ;)

While Elroy has his fair share of vinyl stick on decals, he also has several die-cast model emblems from previously owned vehicles.
These emblems typically have studs on the back side that Elroy runs down with a threading die. Trim the stud to length and transfer the hole pattern to the tool box. Attach with a couple of 10-32 nuts on the back side.  :-*

You guys made me go snap a few quick pics

Another "Hard" emblem. Louisville Motors, "The Home of Hard Chairs"

This particular example was originally held on with double face tape. A couple of stainless flat head screws work fine.

Very few stickers on my box, mostly tool stickers (Proudly display the WRIGHT TOOL decal from TR) and a couple from places I and the box have been. The ones I see that are plastered with decals look a bit ghetto. In my younger days I did plaster my hardhats with decals, the safety man was always ragging on it but he was always ragging on something. I have always enjoyed hardhat decals, they show where you have been and what you have worked on. I dont put them on my hats anymore though, it dosnt have that professional look, now I just put them on my lunch box.

If I get a free tshirt from a supplier I will wear it..........out in the shed to change oil or grease something.

I have had some boxes come through with some vintage stickers and I normally just leave them.  Late model boxes in nice shape, I will remove them.

Don't think I ever put a sticker on a box but I may have.

As to logo clothing, I have several tool truck jackets that I have bought cheap at auctions NIB, that I wear for work.  Hats, too.  Most of my other baseball style hats are freebies, so I wear them.  I likely woudn't buy a logo shirt or cap otherwise

The hardhat like you show has a brim around the entire circumference while some have a sort of bill. What is the difference and why one over the other?

George Carlin purposely wore blank clothing for the very reason of not being a walking billboard for corporate interests.

I wear plan white T-shirts 99% of the time. Not for any theological reason, but for the fact they are cheap and comfortable. If I stain or rip one, I can trash it because I have 20 more just like it.

I have no issues with stickers. Most of my crappies have stickers, my big Proto roller does not. It’s like anything else I guess, I try to keep the nice stuff nice.

A guy who buys a new roller and instantly stickers it up? That’s a little trashy for my taste, but I live on top of a big ol hill in West Virginia, so wth do I know.

I'm not big on toolbox stickers. My SO top box has them as I bought it used. My bottom box is sticker free.  One thing I did with my mid box is I glued chrome auto dealer advertisement logos on the sides. These were from cars that were traded in or where I worked. It was a used mid box and looked crappy. It looked better with them on. When I sold the mid box , I did remove them.

I do wear Carhartt T shirts. Does that count as a logo ?

What he said........ Any little bit helps when you stand out in the sun for 12 hours. When I was working on a border fence project out of collage many of the laborers had sombreros shade rings they put on their hard hats and I thought how goofy is that. After a sunburn on the back of my neck that blistered I ordered one my self and wear it almost daily. I also wear long sleeves (although many safety rules require it now) even if the temp is in the 90's. 10-12 hours of direct sun just wears a guy out physically and mentally plus after 20-30 years of it your skin cancer risk doubles or triples and you look like a wore out baseball glove.

The DWP (Department of Water and Power) crews wear the ones with the brim around the circumference). If I have to spend any time out in the sun the J.A.F.E.tte makes me put on sunscreen although I would rather wear long sleeves even in the summer. I don't spend much time out anymore though. The sunis really nothing to fool with.

Is the material of the hard hats the same between the full brim and the bill style?

Even non-outside jobs suffer from that hazard. I've seen pictures of truck drivers that were in the left seat for 40/50+ years, and the left sides of their face, neck and in some cases arms are literally ulcered compared to the right sides. Even sitting behind a side window pane most of the time the sun had a huge effect on their exposed skin.

When I went to work at Westinghouse and was issued a welding helmet, the first thing I was told to do was find an old welding glove. They told me to cut off the long cuff and fashion a shield to duct tape to the bottom of the hood to protect my neck from the arc and splatter.
UV rays can affect pilots due to flying at high altitudes. They can also get you flying planes with clear canopies overhead. Besides the greenhouse effect the UV rays are beating right down on you.

Yes the same shell materials are used between the two. But there are different types of hard had materials. Plastic, fiber glass, and fiber composite hats. A regular plastic hardhat used on a construction site is useless in a steel mill, the heat makes the plastic too pliable to offer any protection. The amount of protection a hard hat provides is limited anyways. anything much larger than a hammer is going through. There are all kinds of videos on the youtube showing impact test on them, the worst has to be spud bar vs hard hat.

I figured hard hats were mostly for protection bumping your head against something like standing up in a short space or bumping into something. Like safety toe shoes a real crush your toes are still toast but bumps and kicks it's protection.

Does a hard hat make you aware to protect your noggin? I've only worn one a couple times when going through areas under construction and I had to wear one. Never worked in one but I was aware it was on my head.

Would adding Viking horns on one be allowed?

Its more like putting your socks on in the morning. Electricians and mechanical guys are probably more aware of it than anyone. Tying to look into a tight space with one on is impossible. I only remember mine is on when I go to climb into the truck and hit it on the cab of the truck.

The horns although cool, would be no no'ed by your local safety fell'er.

At one time some workers in the plants and refineries tried to use "Cowboy" style hard hats, but most safety guys would not allow them.

I hate wearing a hard hat, especially in summer, bakes your brains out >:(

As to being in the sun, I wear a big straw hat.  Never worried about my arms but I am not in the sun all day.

As to the truck drivers, they also lose hearing in their left ear if they drive a lot with the windows down.  Happened to a buddy of mine.

This reminds me of my grandmother.
One time we were watching the news and they were talking about a man who got arrested stealing a case of beer, and she started laughing hysterically when she saw that it was a case of beer.
She said " if you're going to risk getting arrested at least steel some real beer "  :))
Always lookin' to learn
