If there are others on this site who enjoy the same, then we may want to share some insights/recommendations as to what we consider a good smoke and/or beverage combination.
I just finished working on the Mazda truck to reinstall a rebuilt PS pump and new lines. Today's choice was a very affordable Dominican Cusano CC 6x52 Torpedo coupled with a 2001 Vincent Arroyo Cabernet Reserve. The cigar is not a very complex smoke and doesn't have an overpowering taste, but excels with a beautiful woodsy aroma that compliments the taste of the excellent Cabernet. The aroma of the smoke and premium taste of the wine is a great way to end the day.

What do you guys drink with your cigars, cigs, and/or pipes? I know some folks can't get up in the morning without having a strong coffee and a cigarette. My former co-worker some 20 years ago was like that. Unless he had a cigarette and a few cups of extra strong coffee, he was unapproachable in the early hours of the workday. He said that he picked up the habit during his days in Vietnam.

Depends on the cigar or pipe blend. Most pipe blends pair well beer.

You're a man after my own heart Tim. Those seem like excellent choices, and almost what I would have chosen as well. I can't do much Scotch, but a good Irish single malt, or a premium bourbon will do just fine.
Last week at a friend's house, and while the women were talking in the kitchen, the men went to the garage and enjoyed some cigars and coffee. The guy has a commercial grade Lavazza coffee machine in his garage -- strong Italian coffee/espresso and cigars work very well together.

LOL -- Remember back in the day Phil when Coors was as rare as "Hen's Teeth" here on the east coast? At that time (in the 1970s) it was considered a Deluxe beer in my neck of the woods because it wasn't sold here. Now it seems like our western brethren have the same qualms about Yuengling. Very hard to get in the western part of the country --

Beers used to be very regional at one time. Another thing that makes a huge difference in taste is the alcohol content. I grew up in SoCal and all beer sold was 3.2%. Coors in 3.2% tastes like crap to me but when I got some 6% in Colorado it wasn't bad. My relatives in the Midwest thought we were nuts for liking Grain Belt but it had far more flavor than CA beer. I used to bring cases of 6% beer back from states that sold it.
A good friend ran a beer distributor out in the CA desert. He told me that Coors was only 2.7% and Bud was 3.999999% as it had to be less than 4% which explains Bud popularity in CA at the time. One day our friend showed up at my folks house with a pallet of Heineken 6% cans. He had been sent them by mistake in a shipment and was told don't send them back but dispose of them as they couldn't be sold in CA. It was a lot of work but we disposed of them. ;D

My brother in law drinks it so I've gotten used to it. I'll buy a 12 pack of it every now and then.
Yuengling is still my favorite, more then likely always will be.

To humidify it comes with a water tray, or as an alternative, I use cigar specific Boveda humidity packs that are designed to provide humidity/moisture in pre-selected humidity ranges.

Cedar trays and shelves provide storage for about 300 cigars -- and they will stay in perfect condition in this manner for many years. I change the Boveda bag once every three-four months to keep the humidity in the 72% range.

The reason I bought this little unit was this --- a box of true Cuban Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure cigars. Bought them on a trip overseas and wasn't going to spoil them in a cheap wooden humidor. Yes, US Customs allows you can bring in a limited supply for your own consumption when coming back from overseas.

Beautiful -- and the smell is downright intoxicating. For my taste, nothing beats a true Cuban cigar. Unfortunately there are so many counterfeits out there that it's hard to find them. The tobacconist in Switzerland, where I got these said that in industry circles the consensus is that pretty much any Cuban cigar sold in discount on-line stores, or in the Caribbean tourist destinations, are most likely counterfeit. Not just counterfeit, but in some recent cases full of diseased and moldy floor sweepings. It occurs so often that it has literally become a significant health hazard.

Cigars are the smoke of choice around the campfire during the motorcycle rallies but although I thoroughly enjoy a great bourbon (Eagle Rare), I have never had a cigar that I can say I've truly enjoyed. It's possible I've never had a good one.

Plus -- to enjoy a cigar you don't inhale the smoke into your lungs. The enjoyment comes from the taste that the smoke imparts on your palate and the aroma of the smoke itself.

I received a package from a friend in Europe who purchased a few Christmas items on my behalf. Two wonderful Cuban brands -- La Flor De Cano and Romeo y Julieta. These brands exist outside of Cuba, but the original Havana factories were nationalized by Castro and have been producing the original product under the original names for consumption outside of the US since the revolution.

The La Flor De Cano Petit Corona is the Cuban everyday smoke. A smaller light cigar and modestly priced for the average guy -- even in Cuba.

THIS on the other hand is considered the strongest Cuban cigar manufactured at the present time. The Rome Y Julieta Cazadores ("Hunter" in Spanish). It packs a wallop of strength and flavor. It's a Lonsdale cigar size/shape and takes a good 1-1/2 -2 hours to smoke.

You can't smoke these Cubans right away. They were produced in 2018 and would taste like crap. They need to age for at least five years for the Cazadores, and at least one year for the Petit Coronas. The stronger the tobacco mix, the longer the cigar needs to age. If you look online for premium aged Cuban cigars you'd be amazed at the prices. In some cases you could buy a new car for the price of a single box of finely aged Cubans -- no kidding!!
Cuban tobacco is so scarce due to world demand, that they don't age it very much. For the American market, cigars are rolled from tobacco that originated in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, or Nicaragua (among others). These tobaccos are very well aged and are used exclusively to roll premium cigars. On the other hand, the Cubans use fairly young tobacco, and sell and roll it right away. That's why most people who smoke a real (not fake) Cuban cigar often complain about the harsh taste -- it tastes that way because it hasn't been aged, or in many cases -- properly aged.
I will store these Cazadores for at least five years and smoke the first one in maybe three years. The Petit Coronas will be smoked starting next summer.

Some time ago momma gifted me a bundle of long cigar matches; which work well enough. That said, I now prefer a three flame butane cigar lighter - think pocket sized blow-torch. It works very well, and in a short time you become quite adept at controlling the heat when first toasting the foot of the cigar.

Yeah, lots of BS involved in storing and smoking good cigars. Most of the "connoisseur" stuff can be ignored, except for humidity control. Nothing kills a cigar's taste (regardless of cost) quicker than either too little or too much moisture in the storage container.

You're just scratching the surface -- most of those cigars are special editions and not even Cubans. I saw a cabinet of 25 count 1935 Partagas cigars for sale in London not too long ago (2010), and the sticker was $52,000. These are the ones that were actually for sale to the general public. They had way more expensive offerings, but those were tucked away in a vault-like humidor room. The store in London has extremely rare Cuban vintages that are not for sale to the general public and only available to a select few "well heeled" private customers who regularly spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in the establishment.
I'm not a connoisseur -- but I like aged Cubans when I can afford them (which is once/twice a year tops). At around $100 a shot, I can only afford one or two a year. That's why I decided to buy young/fresh Cubans and age them myself for 5-10 years.

I'm lucky I have permission to smoke in the basement if I close the upstairs door and crack the outside door. Ive only done it a handful of times.
I want to semi-finish the basement and get an air purifier, should help out.

It was a nice mild afternoon around here and the sun was shining, so I tried a Perdomo Pyramid -- and on the suggestion of a friend who joined me, a glass of Bailey's Irish Cream. Never tried Irish Creme with a cigar before, but for this medium strength cigar, it worked very well. I was never a fan of Irish Creme, but have to admit that it tasted fantastic.

The burn is slow and steady, and the cigar remained easy to draw all the way to the end -- perfect!! Paired with an ice cold lager beer, this is as good as it gets in cigar land.

Yes, Guinness pairs well with smooth Fuller bodied cigars.
Rum also pairs well with cigars.
Not many think about it but many of the regions that produce cigars also produce rum. So naturally they pair well.

The floor mats. sound proofing and batting was totally soaked. I pulled the drain plug in the foot well and along with the shop vac pulled a gallon of water out. So much for just sopping it up. I spent twoi hours last night taking up the carpet and the batting and vacuumed them semi-dry . Then I put in fans to circulate air over the entire area for the rest of the night. In the morning it was dry -- one problem down!!! Apparently the AC drain had clogged and backed up in the tube and onto the floor. She drove all day yesterday with the AC on and didn't see it until late last night. A little compressed air in the tube and we have good drainage flow again.
The check engine light was diagnosed as a P0138 Code: O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2. Sure enough the old PowerProbe diagnosed the downstream sensor as bad. OK - no big deal right!! -- wrong. It was seized in place and I had to use the O/A torch to heat it up in order to move it a few threads at a time -- heat and turn, heat and turn. It finally came loose and a new sensor was put in place with a generous amount of copper anti-seize added for good measure.
What a PITA -- but it's done. Now it's time for a cigar and a beer.
A nice Monte Platinum and a German Tucher Hefe Weissbier (from Nuremberg Bavaria). Life is good again --

Called the last call, the story with this cigar is that this was a cigar that AJ would pass out towards the end of the night to his guests.
A mix of select Nicaraguan fillers and binder enveloped in a delicious Ecuadorian Rosado Habano wrapper gives this cigar roasted nut flavors, spice, and a unique creamy, woodsy note.

"Harsh" is a good word -- hints of ammonia and salt. Just goes to show what a few years of proper aging will do for a cigar; especially Cubans. The 2014 batch tasted excellent, and these will as well -- after two/three years in the cigar fridge.

It starts out as a mild cigar, but it gets a bit more flavorful and spicy about half way through. Definitely not a boring smoke.
EDIT: After smoking this cigar, and a few others from this batch, there is one consistent problem. They're hard to keep lit. The construction is such that it draws easy, but it's too loose for staying lit. Not a flavor problem, but irritating because you want some ash to act as a buffer for smooth flavor and even draw. If it has any ash buildup, it dies out. Too bad ---

I was gonna say they haven't made that for 2 yrs now. Kinda disappointed they got rid of that for their Golden Pilsner. I'm not a fan of the Pilsner reminds me of Miller Lite.

Yes, I'm disappointed as well Tim. It was a great tasting Bavarian style wheat beer. I like their Pilsner, but they should bring this stuff back. I bought out the entire stock from two local Total Wine stores a few years ago when I got wind that it would be discontinued, but alas, I'm down to my last few six packs. Recently I switched over to Sam Adams Summer Ale -- it's one of my new favorites.

Apropos -- L'Atelier in French literally translates to "Workshop" in English. I guess he was making a statement with the gift.
Bottom Line: What a GREAT cigar -- smooth taste from start to finish, great burn, good smoke, and it smokes like a cool after dinner drink. Just a hint of spice, but mostly light floral and coffee notes. Nothing harsh or overpowering about this wonderful smoke.
I'm not usually a big fan of the popular Nicaraguan cigars, but damn this thing is good!! I did some research and found that this is a cigar made by famous blend master Pete Johnson -- who also designed the Tatuaje brand. If you like smooth taste and body - this is a joy. That said, it's definitely not a Cuban type blend.

Have not tasted them yet Jabber, but do have a few (6) Toro sized AVO Heritage cigars in the humidor getting seasoned for a few months to try them out. From what I can gather it’s a relatively new creation; existing only as far back as 1996. So by Cuban cigar standards it’s just beginning to have a history.
This box of 25 Figurado style Perfecto cigars are very young - rolled and shipped this year. They’ll need at least 2-3 years in the humidor before smoking. Something to look forward to in retirement- LOL

No special process. I just leave them in the box and store at around 65F and 65% humidity for a few years for that young tobacco to further ferment to get rid of undesirable compounds such as ammonia and other acidic compounds that make the taste harsh and often unpleasant. After a few years the nasty compounds will evaporate and the natural oils and flavors of the leaf will intermingle to make for a pleasant tasting balanced cigar. The stronger the tobacco blend, the longer the cigar needs to achieve flavor balance. I currently have some Romeo y Julieta cigars in the humidor that won't be ready to smoke for at least another 5-6 years.

I only do this process with Cuban cigars. Most all of the quality cigars that come from Central/South America and the Dominican Republic are rolled from quality aged tobacco. The Cubans not so much. They need the cash and they send their cigars out across the world without much aging. It's mostly the tobacconists across the world that do the aging of Cubans. Consequently you pay a huge price for aged Cuban cigars. That is why many folks like myself buy them relatively fresh and age them ourselves, and in a sense it's delayed gratification because you can't really enjoy them until many years on.

The first time I had it I said "that's Miller lite" as it tastes exactly like it. I knew it would be a big hit with that crowd.
Your tastes aren't much different from mine. Im kids all over the place but I like beers with body. Stouts, ales, bock's, lagers. I've had enough IPAs to gotten used to them to enjoy one but two and I loose my liking for them.
I'm honestly willing to try just about any beer once. Some surprise you and are nothing like the typical Brew style they are

Excellent -- like pipes, but never got the hang of them that much because they were often quite hard to keep lit. Personal problem I know -- LOLAs infrequently as I smoke one I have trouble with them as well. Technique changes with pipe and tobacco.

The nomenclature is tradition in Cuba and they have many sizes and shapes that are associated with precise names - such as Palmitas - 32 ga. 4” length or Vegueros - 36 ga. 5” length. Point is the Cubans have many shapes and sizes - (aka Vitolas) that you can’t find in the popular Nicaraguan, Dominican or other Central/South/North American brands.
Also - straight cylindrical cigars are identified as Parejo class cigars, while odd shapes cigars are in the Figurado class.

Wow, you need to know your stuff when ordering a cigar. I would sound like an idiot if I walked into a cigar shop and asked to buy some. :017:First time I walked into a cigar shop I was over whelmed. However any any shop worth it's tobacco will be more then willing to help the newbie.

A La Aroma De Cuba. A medium to full body flavor is zesty throughout with a smooth of deep, earthy core.
Pairing with a Sam 76. Not a big fan of Sam Adams beers this isnt half bad as a crisp mildly hoppy lager.

Good question Steve. There is a specific nomenclature when referring to a cigar’s size and length. Even shape has a set of rules. Since modern cigars have their origin in Cuba, the old-time factories set up rules to identify one cigar from another. Ring gauge measures thickness in 64th of an inch, and length is measured in inches. Hence a cigar of about 42-44 gauge thickness and 5-1/2” length is called a Corona. A smaller Petit Corona would measure about 40-42 gauge and 4-1/2” long. A popular Robusto cigar (note the name has nothing to do with flavor or strength) would indicate a cigar of about 48-52 gauge and a length of 5-1/2”I never knew cigars where named with the shape and size. Those cigar bands can be true works of art. I wonder if some are worth more than the cigar.
There are collectors out there, but many concentrate on vintage bands from pre-WWII. Obviously pre-Castro Cuban bands are a big draw with some well-heeled collectors.

Tim; on tapered ends I use guillotine and on regular cigar shapes usually a "V" cut. Never use a punch --just got never used to the practice.

They say the longer the ash the better the cigar. This one stacked up very well. I didn't get a second picture before it fell off but it lasted half the cigar. A good buckeye made beer to go with it.
Im missing baseball right now so I'm watching the Ken Burn's Documentary on it. As with almost all his work it's a great watch!

Nice lookin' cigar, and I'm sorry about the beer Tim. It happens once in while to me as well. There are certain wines and beers I've learned to stay away from because of the headaches they give me.I forget which one but a Sam Adams beer I could take a few sips and I get a headache.

This a is a great cigar, but for some reason I could not keep it lit, and it tunneled four times - my humidor is set up right (all my other cigars have smoked perfectly). Must be something in the construction because that wrapper just didn’t want to burnNo matter how perfect the cigar process. Sometimes you just get a dud

The 1 major side effect that turns me off cigars is the cigar mouth I get for 2 days afterwards.
People react differently to that aspect. Some have serious aftertaste issues for days, while others like myself only have the problem for a few hours. There are remedies -- brushing and mouthwash are the most effective, but the mouthwash is the most critical.
This stuff kills most cigar taste and odor in a few hours, if used once/twice within that time period. It's a two-part activated rinse that doesn't rely on alcohol and flavorings to do the work.

Can Cuban cigars be imported now?
Not legal to import directly for sale in the US Bob, but you can (as a private citizen, and not a business) place orders with overseas cigar stores and have them shipped legally to you in the US. Higher end European and Asian tobacconists regularly market and sell to a large US customer base. US Customs isn't clear on the amount you can procure for yourself under these regulations, but I usually get a box or two without any problems.
I think the regulations were relaxed under the Obama administration. Hence, the process is pretty straightforward these days.

Interesting cigar - this La Aurora blend changes its taste profile every inch or so - very complex. Trouble is, some profiles I really like, but had one a few minutes ago where I was ready to toss it.Ever have one you just plain chucked? I've had one or two that there was no way I was gonna finish it.

I've chucked plenty of cigars. Stuff that was recommended and I didn't like one bit, or cigars that were way too strong to be pleasantly enjoyed. I usually chuck about 5-10 cigars a year for various reasons. Most often though because they are hopelessly plugged, and no amount of reaming will open them up.Have you ever tried one of these tools?

Went to the local Cigars International today. Pick up a few. Noticed it seemed prices went up. Maybe it's because I haven't been there in a while but average price was $9. I remember it was closer to $7-8 last time I was there.Prices are up across the board. I noticed that at the beginning of the year. Not sure if the COVID pandemic had anything to do with it, but premium cigars are up; especially at the local B&M retail outlets.
Also noticed they had the Padrons locked up in a display case....must of had an issue or something.

I can't take strong Ligero filler cigars either -- not worth the hassle.
As far as aging is concerned, it's a matter of who (i.e. which expert) you want to believe. Most all central/south American cigar tobacco is somewhat aged and ready to smoke when the cigar leaves the distributor or factory warehouses. I usually leave them in the humidor for one or two months and start enjoying them. Ultra-Premium brands usually use well aged tobacco to begin with and they can be enjoyed right after a few days of humidor acclimation.
The only exception is Cubans. They're shipped fresh and they require a long time of aging. I usually age my Cubans one/two years depending on strength. The stronger they are, the longer they need to age. For example I have a bundle of Romeo y Julieta Cazadores sitting in the humidor two years now, and they won't be ready to smoke for at least another five/six years. They are considered the most potent (full bodied) of Cubans, and that potent tobacco needs a long time to release the high nicotine and especially the strong ammonia.

Blanco Primos Exclusivo in a large Gordo size. It’s good, but as a rule I don’t like the thick gauge cigar sizes beyond a Toro. Thick cigars don’t taste as good or are as well balanced as their smaller gauge counterparts - in my opinion.Have the same opinion just too much filler in the "donkey dick" gauge cigars.

Quite right! -- I have a few 2nd and Final third getting acclimated in the humidor. Very good cigars, and well worth the price. Personally, I think they're better than Padron.

I picked up a sampler last night. There are maybe three or four top cigars, the rest are fillers. But that's why you can get a pack like this for $30. What some may think sub par I may like don't know until you try.

I choose mostly based on body and flavor. In the late afternoon or after dinner I prefer a more full bodied stick (mostly Cuban and Nicaraguan), while in the mornings I prefer the milder (mostly Dominican and Ecuadorian) sticks with a cup of coffee.

That being said, do I believe it's worth the $$$? Yes and no. If I smoked cigars everyday I wouldn't buy a box of these. To me this is more of a celebratory cigar. Birthday, anniversary, wedding etc. That's when I think this would be worth the $$$. I've had once just as good for much less.
This was a gift from Ray so I especially enjoyed this one!

I don't know much about smokes but I know a bit about beer. Like most things it is subjective. That said muddy, I really enjoyed both of those beers. The sleepy eye is a little hard to get (at least until next fall) but I will be getting more of that drekkers. It is brewed about 50 miles north of me.Both beers where excellent, smooth easy drinking beers! The snack lasted maybe a few days :))

Rather disappointed in that it was totally plugged. Needed six stabs with the Perfect Draw tool to make it even smokeable. Taste is Ok, but nothing spectacular. Mild/medium body, but I’d rather smoke a good Nicaraguan blend over this thing.

Its always a bummer when a cigar turns out to be a dudThat’s for sure; especially since it came highly recommended. Just goes to show that a cigar’s taste and aroma are a very subjective experience. I much preferred the cheap Spirit of Cuba mixed filler stick from a few days ago, over this premium Havana.

Found this cigar in the back of the humidor. Forgot I had these, but decided to light one up for the daily dog walk. It’s a Cusano P1 Maduro in size Torpedo. I was never a big fan of these, but after sitting in the humidor for a year they matured quite well. It’s a budget bundle stick, but I’m quite impressed with the taste it has developed. Sweet hay aroma and a very slight sweet molasses finish.Glad it turned out to be a good one. I have a few "cheapos" that I'm holding onto to see if they improve.

Finally get to enjoy a nice Blanco Primo in Toro. Between painting, scheduling contractors, and moving equipment to the new hacienda - it’s been pretty hecticRay I know you probably don't have instagram. David Blanco did a series of videos on how the steps of making of their cigars. It included the greenhouses, fermentation, blending and rolling. Pretty interesting.

These have been in the humidor close to a year now, and the flavors have mellowed and become much better than when I first smoked one last year. Age does make these better.

humidor bottom drawer for over a year. Well, the time in storage did wonders for this stick. Smooth and creamy sweet wood/floral taste.

Good for you Tim, As long as it tastes good and you enjoy it, the price is irrelevant. Some of the best tasting cigars I've enjoyed were budget priced sticks.

Congrats on the move. You need to do a thread on missing stuff you found and stuff you forgot you had.Heck I could write a book Les. I found tools at the old house in boxes that were put away two moves before that. This is the final move - everything gets unpacked, identified or tossed. No more hidden gems to find.

Glad you are enjoying the new place Ray. It must be relaxing to sit on the deck with the lake view. All that I can see from my deck is sagebrush, ag fields and mountains. It is nice when the Sierra Mountains 10 miles to the west are covered in snow but with the drought just about all the snow is already melted this year.
It's great Les, but the struggle isn't over. I still have to move and entire machine shop and garage down to the new place once the new garage is under roof). It will be a busy July and August.
In addition the old house will hopefully go on the market by August -- once the painter, carpet layers, and carpenters are done with sprucing the old place up for sale. Lots of work, but my mornings are blissfully quiet watching ducks, geese, and deer strolling in my back yard. No more road noise and/or traffic.

I bet the view of the lake is very nice with the colors in the trees now.Absolutely Les! Like many mid-Atlantic states, fall in Virginia is beautiful. The lake is just the icing on the cake. I sit out and just watch nature unfold. Beats living in the congested DC burbs.

Warped Cigar Co. Chinchalle in Robusto. It’s worth the hype - definitely an amazing ultra-premium cigar. Caramel, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. This is a great cigar.

If your palate gets overwhelmed with a very harsh aftertaste and/or a burning sensation, then you may be smoking the stick too fast. If the ember gets too hot it will burn too quickly and too harsh. Rule of thumb is to take a strong puff of the cigar once every minute to keep it from overheating and to not overwhelm your taste buds.This is very important in pipe smoking as well. How a pipe is packed has alot to do with that.
That’s a general rule - some cigars I smoke faster, but always try to pace myself.

Sure -- the lake is stocked with bass, carp, and crappie. The bass range on the smaller side, but the carp are HUGE -- as long as my arm.
It's a smaller lake, and I venture to guess about 100 acres total. Good enough for swimming, fishing and boating.

Why carp? aren't they invasive?
Not sure why; never bothered to ask, but I guess they do help keep the lake clean. Lots of folks here fish for them (not to eat, but simply as sport). Apparently it takes a completely different technique to fish for carp vs. bass. That said, I'm new to this fishing thing and the only fish I've caught are 1-2lb bass.

Not per day necessarily Jabber, but I usually smoke 4 or 5 per week during the warmer months, and 1 to two per week in the cold winter months. One of the reasons I had a room built above the new garage was to eventually make it into a cigar lounge with AC/heat, along with proper smoke ventilation to allow for a relaxing smoke year round.

As we might know I'm a cheapskate, but I enjoy a cigar and and some sipping whiskey. But the cigars are definitely budget .
I have no issues with budget cigars. I fact some of my favorites are budget priced. In fact two of my favorite budget lines are Rosa Cuba and Spirit of Cuba by Alec Bradley. Both are mixed filler, but are consistently good tasting blends. The more expensive cigars usually offer more flavor profiles and transitions, but I like a lot cigars that have a monotone sweet tobacco flavor profile that stays the same over the entire cigar.

Thanks Tim! During the spring and summer I have full on early morning light, but the tree cover begins to hide and dissipate it around 10-11AM. That said, most of the day I still put up a sun umbrella to provide more shade. Also where I usually sit I'm protected by a covered patio. Hopefully we'll have a 12x18 gazebo on the deck next year to make it a more permanent sun/weather shelter.

Never tried that cigar, but Bolivar's generally tend to be on the full body and strength side of the equation. I tend to like that kind of blend myself.

I never bought into the Undercrown cigar brand hype. They just never appealed to me, and I avoided the brand. Then something changed - maybe my palate, or their blending methods - maybe both, but the Maduro wrapper Toro is now on my shortlist. I usually leave them in the humidor for a couple of months, and they get better.Maduro is my favorite wrapper. Good profile and smoke from them

Haven't even started. I slipped a disc almost four weeks ago and am still recovering. Can't move and bend, and my left leg is partially numb due to the bulged disc pushing on the sciatic nerve. Will see a neuro specialist next week --
I still have to run air drops in the garage, and finish some other garage projects before i can get on the bike. No use taking it all apart and have the pieces sit there all over the place.

Back atcha Tim -- Happy St. Paddy's Day! --- enjoy. I'll have a nice stogie tomorrow when it's nice out. We had torrential flood waters today, and the lake rose by a good foot.It rained in the morning here, then turned out fairly nice. I took advantage and went out back to enjoy.

Don’t know where I got it, but this is a smooth aged tobacco cigar. Lots of sweet dried fruit and baking spice notes.

Great cigar. Got it as a Christmas gift and decided to give it a try. Fruity flavors and a wonderful sweet tobacco smoke profile.Can't say I've ever seen that one.

This one is a Nicaraguan filler along with bright and red Virginia and St. James Perish Perique.
It definitely has a more smooth creamer smoke that of a pipe tobacco with the sweet Virginia and the Perique shines through with the not overpowering spice.
Enjoying with a Glenlivet 12 yr single malt.

Not every premium cigar hits the spot. This My Father cigar company interpretation of the old Fonseca blend is way too harsh and blunt for my taste. Leaves a burnt taste and scratchy tingle on my palate.That's a bummer as they are usually a great cigar makers

Just got back from paying my property taxes. What a pleasant surprise. After living in the DC region for most of my life, where the taxes were outrageous, moving to the country decreased my tax bill by more than 50%.One of the reasons I'm ok with living in a "rural" county/township.

Got a hold of some budget Factory Smokes by Drew Estates. They are a gift from an associate of mine. Very good consistent sweet tobacco and floral flavors. This is considered a true budget cigar, but it smoked wonderfully.One of those companies that even their "low budget" or "lower shelf" stuff is good!

Went ahead and fired this one up tonight. Accomplished a few things today including swapping a three prong for a four prong cord on the daughters clothes drier and hooking up the washer at her and her significant others home this am. Also took a long the blower and cleaned out the gutters . I'm glad to help them as the significant fellow isn't much of a handy sort. Then the grand daughter and other daughter came over to swim. Threw out some stuff from the garage and took this in for an ender. Decent for the low cost. Good day.

Congratulations on the raise Tim. If there ever was a time to smoke a cigar, then this is it. Padron is a top notch cigar and I'm sure you enjoyed it. I enjoy some Padron cigars, but for the most part, I prefer other brands.Same here. I've usually avoided because the few I've had didn't seem to justify their higher price.

That pipe reminds me of what I believe was an opium pipe, circa WWI. I found said pipe in my grand dad's foot locker after cleaning out my folks place after dad died and mom was moving.Could be. opium was a common prescription for "shell shock" or what'd we call PTSD today.

Glad you enjoyed it Tim. It looks like a classic taste combo. I admit I know nothing about pipe tobacco, but every so often the aroma of a certain pipe blend will remind me of times long ago when I was a kid and the men in the family would sit around and enjoy their cigars and pipes after a family get-together. It's a very comforting feeling. Even 50-60 years after the fact it still makes a big impact.My grandfather would smoke his pipe, while I sat on his lap as a young boy, watching the baseball or football games.
Unfortunately I've been battling a major sinus infection and haven't enjoyed a good cigar in weeks. That will change come Thanksgiving day. I have some nicely aged Cubans I want to try.

That's not an easy question to answer Herb. The general consensus is that the lightest blend cigars are made with Dominican tobaccos. There are exceptions of course because handmade cigars are usually a blended product, but a cigar with pure Dominican fillers, binders, and now even wrappers is considered to be the choice for many new cigar smokers. In addition, some Honduran blends are also very light. If you have a good tobacconist in your area, it's worth a trip to ask for a light Dominican blended cigar.
A common misconception for new cigar customers is the mistaken belief that a dark wrapper will be indicative of a strong smoke. Wrapper color doesn't mean anything as far as the strength or smoothness of the cigar is concerned. It's the tobacco blend inside that wrapper that determines the strength and ultimate smoothness of the cigar.

Happy Independence Day Tim! Glad you were able to enjoy a relaxing cigar. I also enjoyed a Knuckle Sandwich cigar on the deck, but it was just too damn hot and humid to finish the entire stick. I retreated to the house and finished a refreshing ice cold Yuengling Lager. These last two days have been like a steam sauna in central Virginia. To top it off the Canadian wildfire smoke that continues to drift down the east coast has become a daily health hazard.I tried outside at first, however it was so dang muggy and buggy I gave up and went back inside. Luckily the smell of the cigar really doesn't permeate the house. The basement has that slight smell for a day or so but nothing too heavy to be bothersome

Absolutely Tim! In fact it was so humid outside over the weekend that it ruined a cigar. I took a cigar from my long term storage humidor (which is set at 62F and 65% humidity), and I unwrapped the cellophane and set it in the ashtray for about 20 minutes to acclimate and to get a drink and clean the deck a bit. When I came back to light it, the wrapper and even the binder had cracked in several places. The sudden burst of hot humid air was a huge shock to that cigar.
I've had that the wrapper crack a few times, but have never had conditions be so bad that the binder actually cracked as well. Had to toss a really good stick that day.

. At least I’m at a point where I can smoke a cigar under my dry screened in porch section. I chose a Pete Johnson Tatuaje Reserva in what looks like a small Robusto or Rothschild size. Great little afternoon cigar. Spicy, floral and cedar notes.

This is a cigar that has languished in the back of the humidor for a while. I don’t even recall the name since there is no band on it. I think it’s a Rocky Patel Maduro of some kind, but not certain. It’s a pretty mild creamy smoke, but nothing outstanding. That’s probably why it was forgotten in the first place.Like the old saying goes "a bad day of fishing is better then a good day at work"

Haven’t had one in a while, and forgot that I even had a few in the humidor. Great thick molasses and baking spice notes. This is a great cigar to smoke any time, but reminds me of fall and Thanksgiving type of flavors.

Don’t buy cigars like this. This is a 64 ring gauge cigar (that means 1-inch diameter) and 7-inches in length. Cigars like this are really not enjoyable. The filler overwhelms the wrapper nuanced flavors and due to their size they burn like firewood. These cigars are popular in some circles, but the consensus is that they are mostly novelty items. No knowledgeable cigar smoker or aficionado will smoke one of these monsters and declare them a good tasting cigar, or a good value. This one has been sitting in the humidor and it will stay there as a lesson in what cigar “overkill” really is.Same here ray anything much over 52 is basically a waste

Lord that is one formidable looking stogie Ray! Surely you don't smoke that entire beast in one setting do you? If so, I am thinking that might be an all day project! 😆
It's a Churchill size and looks large, but the construction is flawless and they burn well. I usually get about two hours (maybe a bit more) of relaxation time out of a Churchill of this caliber. Cigar smoking forces you to actually make the time for the experience to be positive. Smoke it too fast and it becomes to hot and harsh; too slow and it often dies out and forces a hot relight which can negatively affect the overall flavor.
With a cigar of this size, I often enjoy it after lunch or after dinner with an adult beverage while also reading a book of interest. It's amazing how quickly you can calm down and reset your body into "relaxed" mode when enjoying a cigar. Steve Harvey is a passionate cigar aficionado and coined the term "Cigar Yoga", and he's absolutely correct in that assessment. You can't help but relax when enjoying a cigar (or pipe for that matter).
Also, since you asked Herb. I usually don't smoke a cigar that as been sitting idle for a few hours. I just don't like the taste of a cigar that has been previously smoked and relit after several hours. It's never the same flavor, and in most all cases it tastes funky (if that makes sense).

There is a lot of enthusiasm concerning Padron cigars. The company has almost a cult-like following. I purchased these 1926 series Rothchilds a few years ago and wasn’t impressed. This last stick has been sitting in the humidor for almost three years, and it still doesn’t do it for me.
Construction is flawless, the burn is precise, and the tobacco leaves are pristine, but the flavor is still harsh; with a heavy note of a burnt bread aftertaste. I guess this cigar doesn’t fit my palate.

Absolutely Tim! One of the main reasons I was always disappointed in Cigar Aficionado Magazine's "Top Ranking" cigar picks. Nine times out of ten none of those choices even came close to what I liked in a pleasant and relaxing cigar. Just a different palate than the norm I guess.

One of the cigars I always recommend is the Baccarat line. It’s a blend of Honduran tobaccos, and tends to be very mild.
Most new cigar aficionados really enjoy this light smoke.

A basket pipe is basically a 2nd. They are pipes that just meet quality standards and are sold at much lower cost. In a break and motor store these style pipes are usually kept in a basket, which coined the phrase "basket" pipe.
It's first smoke is Sutliff Crumble Kale Red Virginia. Just a basic blend of red Virginia tobacco, but still very flavorful.

Nice smoke with a dark wrapper and even draw. The smoke is thicker and has a cocoa-powder sweetness.

How much does a cigar of the quality those you routinely show in this thread Ray? I don't think I have smoked a cigar in most of 40 years, but honestly those you show look like cigars that I would be very apt to try if the opportunity ever presented itself!
I guess if you're asking price -- most premium cigars that I smoke can range from $8-$25 each. That's a wide range, but in the cigar world things are changing for the better (in terms of quality) every year; hence the prices reflect that commitment to quality.
The cigar market exploded during the COVID crisis, and the demand went through the roof. Prices across the board went up %20-%30 within a year or two.
The exception are Cuban cigars. Since the pandemic, Cubans have increased %50-%100 and more. In some cases prices have quadrupled and quintupled.

Average Pipe tobacco averagees $10-15 for a 1.5-1.75 oz "tin" of tobacco. However that will last more smokes than a cigar. Bulk tobacco is cheaper.

Agree totally Tim. The cigar "Flavor Profiles" and "hints" of certain flavors vary from person to person, and from cigar to cigar; even when smoking the same brand and from the same box. Most people tend to pick up sweet, pepper, spice, when first dabbling in cigars, but after some time your palate gets used to the earthy and floral notes.
I often get flavors differences between two identical cigars when I smoke them a few weeks /months apart. It just depends on how your palate is sending signals to your brain that particular day. That's why cigar reviews from folks on social media outlets don't really mean much to me. I hardly ever taste what they're tasting.

It started off very harsh and just tasted like salt and dry hay. I was about to toss it, but decided to let it rest and smolder for another few minutes. Darn if it didn’t wake up and turned into a fine sweet tobacco and hay flavored smoke.

Box press is just for show. It doesn’t do anything for enhancing flavor or burn. Like many shaped cigars, it’s meant to show the skill of the cigar maker.

It happens alot with pipe smokers. They often gravitate to aromatics as beginner blends (rightfully so and I recommend it) but then they try Virginia, burley or English blends and it opens a whole new world for them.
But in the long run (and sometimes this is hard for the pipe/cigar world to grasp) smoke what you like the way you like there really is no wrong way.

However I'm not very happy with the fit and finish. The finish leaves a bit to be desired. There's filler caked all over the bowl in the right side. Also the steam isn't drilled true in the bowl.
For a $12 pipe things like these are to be expected however my other corncobs have better fit and finish.
I reached out to MM to let them know my disappointment. I'm not expecting anything other then just to let them know of this quality slip. However looking on the website this style pipes is no longer there.....

Disappointing for a company with such a storied past and such a rich history. I hope they don't dissapoint and reach out to you to resolve the issue.They did the right thing (although not necessary) and are sending me another one.
Unfortunately lately their QC has been slipping. Seeing quite a few posts on Facebook about it.

Growing up in Missouri I remember seeing MM brand pipes for sale everywhere, grocery stores, drug stores etc. I don't know about these days.If anything I would get one just for a conversation piece. That would be one long smoke with a lot of tobbaco.
You should have gotten one of those big honkin pipes like General MacArthur used to smoke mudman! I noticed they still sell them.
