I bought some new HF Hanson style socket holders and was swapping out the old HF cheap ones and noticed oil in the trays. WTH did I spill in there? ........
Nope gas struts leaked. I wonder if I should call Horrible Freight or try something off amazon? Are any of these universal.

My experience with HF tech support has been very positive. I would not be at all surprised if they sent you new struts at no cost even of the box is out of warranty.

Easy to to find, gas strut,+ length, just pay attention to the mount. There is a difference in the quality.
You already know the quality of the HF one.

Curse of the China buffet! :))

Is it the older first generation "Krinkle" finish model Bob? HF is very good at stocking spare parts for those models. They sold thousands of those krinkle finish boxes over the years, and will most likely give you an excellent deal on replacements

It is the old Kringle paint, probably 10 years old. I tried calling them earlier but of course it’s the weekend. Thanks guys for input I will try them first.

I HATE those things! Especially on car trunk lids. >:(

I have googled gas strut in the past and found many different ones online.
Most will be the ball stud mount type.
Lenght and pounds are the other importants.
You can figure pounds out with a scale if not marked on the strut and its not totally blown. Simply stand the strut on the scale and push down to collapse it. See how many pounds it reads while collapsing. Add some pounds to it and you should be close. Has worked for me in the past

If it has a part number, most likely find it and substitutes.

What about hitting the junk yard and seeing if some car hood struts would work, gotta be better quality ? Say 1999 ford f150 explorer etc.

I recently bought a HF box and have been wondering about those struts. Why does it seem they always mount them with the seal end down?

When I worked at the Chevy shop there was a recall on some leaking lift gate struts on the Traverse. When we replaced them they were to be mounted upside-down (seal end down) to help prevent dirt and debris from collecting on the seal and possibly wearing on the strut. Almost all modern motorcycles have the front forks mounted that way as well.

Finally bought replacements from HF. A little pricey at $17 each but it was worth a few bucks to not have to possibly change mounts on a Amazon universal strut. I did google the webs as to why they were mounted shaft down. Stokester is right, less dirt in shaft and the oil is gravity placed to lube seal and also the hydraulics don’t operate correctly if inverted which I confirmed myself out of curiosity.
