Making 1/4 bit shafts for the mini easydriver's
« on: April 18, 2019, 12:27:27 AM »
I started with some 1/4 bit driver extensions I had laying around.
First step is to slip it through a warsher and chuck it in the vise.
Then I took a pry bar and pried it right off it's 1/4 hex shank.

Step 2 is to take a section of an appropriately sized square screwdriver shank and grind the end into a crude hex and anneal it.

Then I pressed it on, drilled through it, and pinned it in place.

Did 3 this way so far, they're all different lengths because I used what I had.

I reckon they're about as strong as they can be.

Yep, and it worked well enough.
Of course being a round surface it walked a bit on the one, but still got the job done.

You can grind just a little bit of flat where you want to drill on a round surface. Just a hair bigger than where the pointy end of the drill will contact the surface will help.

I forgot to mention to centerpunch the flat to keep the drill bit from walking also.

I always center punch.
The flats are a good idea, may not have looked great on these but when it doesn't matter filing a flat is definitely something to try.
