50 pound tap and die set
« on: August 24, 2021, 04:18:07 PM »
I'm known to buy anything, could not pass up this Greenfield "Little Giant" tap and die set.  Contains 16 taps, 16 dies, 2 die holders, 2 tap holders and the reason I bought the set, a brace die holder.  I think it is the largest set they made in the very early 1900's.  In fact, although everything is "Little Giant" it is a mix of Greenfield and Wells.  Greenfield bought Wells very early in 1900, so they must have used the Wells inventory.  Everything is Greenfield except the largest dies.  The arrow points out the brace die holder which threads into the smaller dies as shown in the last picture.  The box is solid wood, 35" long, 10" wide and 2 1/4" deep.  I was only missing a few taps when I bought it, but I had the needed ones.

That's the Rolls Royce of taps for sure.
Bloody box 'o' gold.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Yes very nice

I see those old sets often,  rarely complete and normally not that nice.  Gotta love the box

As others have said, this is a beautiful set and the box in such great condition is just frosting on the cake.
Thanks for sharing your find with us.

Nice to see the set so complete, something I have never found.  Something in a wood case was bound to be good.

Great set and I have never seen round dies of that type before.

Thanks for all the comments.  Back in the day there were a number of companies that made die holders to fit braces.  This set is the first that I have seen that included a die holder in the set.

Got 1 or 2 of those brace drill die holders, even put one to use a time or 2.   The owner of the Little Giant trip hammer co.,  told me that over the years more than a dozen firms used the Little Giant logo.  Looks like the one what made this  built some real good quality stuff.

Some of those older taps sets are pretty sought after by the old engine crowd. Seems theres a few sizes NLA and those old sets are the only ones left. Cant remember what size it was tho.
